So my buddy, an avid thrifter told me that my local Value Village
had a Teddy Ruxpin for $50. He said the price is worth it and the
condition looked good. I never had one of these, and I was tempted
to go pick it up. A few days later on his thrift store rounds he
mentioned they still had it. I'm honestly not much of a thrift store
hunter, from what I understand these places are searched daily by
dealers looking to score. However I often donate to Value Village and
I remembered I had a coupon for 30% off my purchase. So Sunday on my rounds
I happened to be in the area, so I popped in, saw Teddy was still available,
and asked if my coupon would work. They said it would, so Teddy would be marked
down from $50 (Canadian) to $35 + tax ($40 Canadian all in).
Needless to say I picked up my first Teddy Ruxpin. He was smaller than I remembered.
Turns out I got the 2006 version by Backpack Toys. He's in good condition, very clean,
but was without a cartridge.
I was hoping to be able to figure out some kind of hack/mod so he would work without
tapes/cartridges. So far I haven't found any information on that. I've seen where the older
models, G1 thru G3 apparently can work via an iPod with MP3 files of the original audio.
From what I've come to understand, the audio tracks contained the story on the LEFT side,
and the RIGHT side contained a series of pulses/tones that would generate the blinking of
the eyes, moving of the mouth.
I'd love it if my Teddy would be working, but I'm cool just to have him as a display piece.
I'm sure now I'll look for others, hoping to find the older, larger version.
If anyone is familiar with these is $40 a good price for the 2006 model ? Anyone aware of
any hacks for this model ?
Thanks all
