That was my original setup and it worked well. The Retrotek transcoder developed a fault in one of the color channels and I ended up replacing it with the superior GreenAntz transcoder (see the pic below).
Since you mention it, I've found the following make for a 'winning combo' using CRTs in an emulation system that uses component in.
- Good understanding of how GroovyMAME & CRT Emudriver 2.0 work together
- Quality VGA-Component Transcoder i.e. GreenAntz
- Reasonable quality CRT TV with component in
- access to the service menu on the TV to set scan geometry
- some knowledge of convergence and purity adjustments via yoke controls (if needed)
RGB modding is the next level up for high quality builds using a CRT TV but the differences in quality seem minimal.
