Joystick advice needed - selling a cab to a civilian
« on: November 29, 2018, 03:32:26 pm »
Hi all,

I have decided to sell my cocktail cab that I never use.  It's set up with a 19" vertical monitor in it and a blue vs green layout.  Right now it has original Wico joysticks, each with the Perfect 360 adapter on the bottom.  One with a blue balltop, the other in green.   I am going to remove the Wico joysticks for three reasons (1) I want them (2) the buyer won't care (3) I don't want to worry about servicing them, and I've had some other Perfect360 adapters exhibiting flakey performance in the past.

Here's my question: What should I replace them with?  Honestly, I personally have almost zero experience with non-wico joysticks.  I have three cabinets and a bunch of random parts, but I've only ever used Wico leaf joysticks.   I want to replace them with something decent, which is why I'm asking here rather than just ordering some Amazon.com "arcade-kit", but the person who will buy this cab will be less discriminating than anybody here on BYOAC.   The cab is/will be set up with only classic vertical games.  PacMan, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Qbert, etc

I looked at GGG, because they used to be my go-to for new parts.  Also, they offer various colors of balltop sticks and I'd like to stay with the blue and green balltop pairing.  The Spitfire is reasonably priced ($8.95) and can be outfitted with custom color balltops for an additional $4.95   Would this be a good option for a classic vertical cab or are they a better feel for "fighting" games?   Does anybody have any other recommendations?

Thanks!
qb

Anything with a brand name however cheap would work. Spitfire meets those criteria.

I ordered a pair of the spitfire sticks out of curiosity and didn't care for them.  The engage distance for one direction was different than the engage distance for the opposite direction.
I didn't spend any time troubleshooting.  Ended up using them to upgrade my nephew's cab to 2-player because I didn't like them well enough to use in my own projects.  >:D

Haven't used them myself, but lots of builders on here like the Zippy sticks which are the same price.

I'm a huge fan of the hand candy ball-tops.  Can't recommend them enough.
Whatever stick you choose, the polished surface with no seams or mold marks will make them feel high quality.

Thanks.  I'll go for the zippy's, I think.

Hmmm, I'm going to ask a potentially dumb, but important question.  Do the Zippy sticks mount holes match those of my Wicos?   It's a metal CP on the cocktail and I'm certainly not planning on drilling new holes.  They look more rectangular than the wico hole layout.  The GGG page mentions mounting patterns on other joysticks, but doesn't on the zippyyys

EDIT: Yeah, I think I know the answer.  Like i said, in the 14 years that I've been here, I've only EVER dealt with wicos (well, and williams 49-way joysticks) but I guess the zippys are based on the Seimitsu, which definitely have a different mounting layout.  Unless somebody corrects me, I guess I'm back to the drawing board.   Going to go search for Happs, I guess.

NOW you tell me!   lol

I read a bunch of old threads and from what I read, Competitions were much preferred by the posters over Supers.   But we'll see.  I ordered a couple the other day and will hopefully get them soon.

I guess it actually doesn't matter to me personally.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to remain a wico fan for life

You can't really make a wrong choice, imo.  Everything I've used has been superior to my experience back in the day.

Yeah, they have a nice neutral feel that doesn't favor any particular game style and they just don't wear out. They are by far my favorite cheap stick.

I went with these on Paige’s recommendation a long time ago, he’s right. For best overall experience, go with these. If you’re gonna be playing a lot of street fighter, go with Comps.
