Jamma build cost?
« on: November 28, 2018, 10:50:12 pm »
So i'm planning to build a new machine hopefully soon. It's going to be a ms pacman cabaret style. I've been researching how to build a jamma system and i think i could firure it out with a bit of help. What i'm curious about is the cost of a mame cab (ising an old pc) vs a 60 in 1 jamma game.  My cost sheet for the mame cab comes out to about $600.00 Is that comparable to a jamma build? Here is my cost sheet to give an idea of my thinking. Thanks!

60 in 1 is a little cheaper compared to using an old dumpster PC, but the dumpster PC is way, way better. I had a Midway cocktail with a 166mhz CPU in it and some sort of DOS Mame back in 2003 or so, and even that ancient CPU and software setup was better than the 60 in 1 is today.

I scratchbuilt a 60 in 1 with an oak cabinet, real crt monitor and the Happ Pac-Man replacement stick a few years back. Almost no one played it and I was thrilled to trade the thing for a Golden Axe conversion in average condition.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Thanks. I think a pc may be a good way to go. O have one thats only 4 years old and i suppose it would be better to be albe to play other games not offered on the  jamma pcb.

$5

Put a Pi Zero in it.

Plays everything full speed for Mame4all and you do not need an encoder board.

You are welcome.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Crt or lcd?

Jamma multi boards are zero configuration. You can boot quick and can kill power. Can’t do that with a normal pc build. If I were to go with a Jamma multi board, my project would have been done years ago. Ps it costs some money to get my pc to run current software while having an 11 second boot time. Arcades are usually instant.

I did look into that. It looked like they were a nightmare to program. Software is not my strong point.

You can use retropie on a pi, its not hard to setup. I can answer any questions you might have.

https://retropie.org.uk - Download the retropie image to put on an sd card.
