Picked up a free cabinet... what is it though?
« on: April 21, 2005, 12:17:41 pm »
So after I saw This I promptly ran up there to see what the had. I'm not sure if everyone knows this. I feel like seeing a kitten in the rain if someone goes to throw out an arcade cabinet... empty or not. So I snagged 4 empty cabinets so they wouldn't meet a trash dumpster. I don't know if I was being greedy or not. Anyhoo, I plan on restoring these in my small apartment one at a time. The first one I have.

I'm not sure what it is. I thought the guy said Galaxian but as you can see my cabinet doesn't look anything like that.

And for the record the other 3 are A.P.B machines(no controls and no monitors)

That is nothing to weep about.  It was converted a long time ago.

No...the thing to get weepy over was the guy that took a working BT, cut down the top, and converted it to a Pac-Man.

The stoopid SOB took a cab with a production run of a couple thousand, and turned it into a cab with a production run of 500,000.

Strip it.  It looks like there is some side art under the black paint

are there any identification plates on it from the manufacturer?  that would be cool if there was...

i hate seeing conversions.  reminds me of one where someone converted a game into some extreme volleyball game.  why?  volleyball has got to be the worst game out there.  why convert anything to it?  anyways, i'll get down off this soapbox since none of you guys did anything wrong...

Yeah I was wondering why the t-Moluding was painted black.  I planned on repainting it anyway. I don't really know what I want to do with it yet. I got it so I could learn how to fix it. It's been beaten pretty badly, it's definately workable though. I think I can touch it up enough. Unfortuantely I hate Burger Time... :(

hate it or not, it's worth restoring to original condition, if not just to appease the angry souls on this board.  you could probably even sell it to the closest byoac member if your thinking about painting over the sideart and such.

i sure wouldn't do anything to this cabinet though, you'd have a killer mob on you in seconds.  nice find though.  if you want to mame a cab, do the apb cabs.

Well that's why I'm here honestly. If I were planning to MAME it I wouldn't ask what it was. I guess I'm gonna try and figure this thing out from scratch. I originally figured, whatever game it was I'd build a supergun around it and run it that way. But Burger Time wasn't naturally Jamma, nor do I know where to find an original board for it... This ought to be a fun project to say the least.

When you say don't do anything. You mean don't Mame it right? Cause I kinda have to putty the holes and stuff... I refuse to take this thing apart. I just hope it doesnt' fall apart like that Street Fighter cabinet I fould 3 years ago.

I think the original graphics are painted on, right?
If so, you'd better use some extra TLC when stripping off that black.

Here's a BurgerTime PCB and a Jamma adapter for it- so you could wire the cab as a standard Jamma. You'd have to pay international shipping of course, and the auction still has 1 day left.
Here's another, this one's a little more local.

It would be great to see that cab of yours restored, but those photo's look so bad that I don't think it would be a huge crime to Mame it or make some kind of supergun. I'd say retoring it would be a huge challenge and if you don't even like the game it'd be a little difficult to get excited about it. If you don't want to do it, maybe you should see if anyone else would like a shot at restoring it on RGVAC or something.

Burger Time is such a great game, it's a shame you don't like it.  I'm sure you could find someone willing to trade you a cab for it though, if you really didn't want to restore it.  I know I'd love to have it anyway heh.

Any chance of grabbing a few measurements off it? Not that I'll be building one, but it's always nice to have some plans just in case my wife decides she wants a BurgerTime upright (fingers crossed). I haven't seen any BT plans yet.

Here's a PDF template you could use to take measurement notes (if you'd be so kind)...

Snagging the measurements off that would be really sweet.  I'd love to build a mini.  It's unique and kid-friendly (no blood/guts).

Burger Time teaches kids to thow salt into the eyes of innocent breakfast foods!  Hardly what I'd call "kid-friendly". :o
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

so, besides the hat part.. is this cab identical to pac-man or Ms Pac man?  I know Midway did many cabs that had similar lines but werent exactly the same.. like Bosconian, Pacman and Ms Pacman/Galaga all look very similar until you get them side by side.. sort of like Robotron, Joust, Moon Patrol and Stargate being very similar. just curious about BT...

Where did the template you put up come from....

Is it from some type of library or something?

Sorry, that isn't worth restoring, unless you have a real thing for Burgertime and want to spend $400+ to have a black painted Burgertime. You can buy a working unconverted one for that if you look long enough.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Yeah I was planning on whipping out the messuring tape this weekend. I didn't see the plans on Jakobud.

Regardless... this cab should be in better shape than it is now. Currently I wanna knock out all the nicks and scratches in it regardless. There's no way of saving the art under it, TLC is my arch nemisis.(see the Street Fighter incident of 2002). So I was planning on sanding it and painting over it again. As much as I want a machine to run my own stuff on (as well as MAME). As stated I have 3 other cabinets that I could use.

I'm gonna atempt to restore this one(Even if it's not worth the money... it's worth the knowledge and experience). I'll keep you guys updated.

- Maybe I should give it another chance... it's been almost 20 years. :)

Me too. :) I've restored cars that the "experts" told me were not worth restoring. Yes I could have bought a car similar to the one I ended up with when finished for roughly the same money, but I got the satisfaction of bringing a classic back from the dead. Also some of us just enjoy being able to do it ourselves a lot more than writing a check and bringing home a fully functional item.
