High Score Competition #201: Bongo

High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

----------------------
Game Name : Bongo (1983, Jetsoft)
ROM Name  = "bongo"
----------------------

Settings:
   default : Lives -3

Controls:
    Joystick: 8-way joystick

Bongo, Jetsoft 1983

Not too much info on this one:

An early platform game.

You play on the role of a hilarious tourist trapped in a cave and chased by a red dinosaur, you have to jump through different rock platforms and elude the lava, falling objects and the animals to pick six bonus objects without losing a life, as you advance in level you get to higher difficult areas where find and follow the caveman path to exit the cave alive, but before you must use an old cage to trap the annoying dinosaur.

This game is pretty bad, but it's so bad it's actually good and very addictive trying to beat the high score (which seems good for this competition).

Sorry if I have done this wrong (be gentle it is my first time).

Good luck!

Final scores.

This could actually have been a decent game ... if the controls didn't suck ass. A jump button would have worked wonders.

Would it violate competition rules if you mapped jump to a button instead of the joystick?

Since it's done to make the gameplay easier, the player doing that would have an unfair advantage. However ... If everyone would do it, it would be ok.
I have tried it, this really makes a difference. No more dying because the joystick didn't register the diagonal, no more accidental jumps because the stick did register a diagonal when it shouldn't have. This game needs a two-way stick and a jump button.

Oh, and just for the recrod :

110,190. Using the crappy controls.

Some competitors used a joystick during last year's Space Zap comp.

Controls:
5 buttons (Up, Down, Right, Left, Fire)
Can easily be played with joystick as well.

Seems like the same thing but in the opposite direction.   :dunno

Scott
P.S. Using a jump button really does make the game better.  Thanks for bringing it up, Yamatetsu.   ;D

Yup, that's the same thing. I remember not being able to play Space Zap using the buttons so I didn't play it at all. Using the stick would obviously have been much easier, so it would have been an advantage. In that particular game, you can argue that using the stick you probably will be slower at firing since it takes time from moving say, from left to right, whereas just pressing the button is much faster. But that's another story.

Using a jump button really does make the game better.  Thanks for bringing it up, Yamatetsu.   ;D

Nothing like having proper controls  ;D

If playing on a keyboard it uses the arrow keys just like any other game would so don't see why it would be any different than remapping an arcade system to use a button layout you prefer. Or does that mean anyone on a PC can't play this game for the comp ? :dunno

If you use an input device (a button, for example) that was not used in the original game to make the game easier, you gain an advantage. So in this case yes, if you use a keyboard, you are using a more precise control method than the original game did.
But as far as I'm concerned, anyone using a keyboard already is at a disadvantage  :D

Agreed - normally using the keyboard is a slight disadvantage but the PC is pretty much always on where the bartop needs to be turned on when playing - so depending on how much time I have to play will determine if it's played on one or the other (Since I've been playing PC games for Ages the keyboard controls are pretty much second nature at this point)

It's the second lo last. I have made it to level 27, where you have to actually catch the dinosaur by jumping against a cage. If you mistime it, you die. I had of course just one life left to find that out.

Not a new high score, but THE END (?)

Mr. Dino has been captured, people are dancing (for quite a long time), suddenly Mr. Dino's twin brother appears ! Run, everybody, RUN !

Thus begins the second loop, which is a bit harder as everything is sped up.

THink this game is more a memorization of the level layout and timing - new levels take a few tries to get the movement through that screen timed out but it pretty much is just repitition once you get it worked out. ( The important thing is getting the bonuses for not dying between IIRC 6 bonus items picked up - as the bonus continues to increase another 10K each time it is completed - ie first bonus is 10K next 20K then 30K which adds to your score quite a bit ! ) So stringing together the 6 items without dying will make a big difference in the score.

This game ain't nearly as bad as I was expecting!

I think some-time in the early 80s a Roc'N'Rope ran off and had an affair with a copy of Smurf Rescue, and poof.  This thing.

Second try: 58k... I gotta figure out the hit detection on the bonus items and on the platforms you have to jump up sorta half-through...  blerg

EDIT: cracked 100k, this game is surprisingly fun.

Anybody figured out the game mechanics though?  From what I can tell from running the first screen over and over again, you seem to get points for more than just pickups and your X position like I thought at first.

I *believe* it has something to do with spending more time in the air, or at least leaving the screen in the air.  Hmm.  It seems like a small difference (~200 on the first screen is as high/low as I've gotten) but it could matter for some of you hardcore types!
