Builds documented here?
« on: December 02, 2015, 12:17:37 pm »
Wasn't sure where to put this, so i'm starting here. Admins feel free to move them.

Saw a tweet about Mame cabs, and noticed two builds that I haven't seen here. Anyone else seen these?

I think they were both here.  I've seen them before anyway.

The Steampunk one looks pretty cool, but the x-arcade stick stuck in it is very out of place IMHO.

I think if you searched Monster Arcade here you might find it.  If memory serves, there are several called that though.

Yeah a quick search didn't yield much..lots of people have used monster as a descriptor. It's not a huge deal. With all the hubub about traditional vs. unique, and theme I thought these were an interesting approach.

I feel that both of those are incredibly complex and beautiful builds that were wrecked by getting cheap and lazy in the wrong spots.

At least the Frankenstein one can legitimately have a frankenpanel.

What's with the Playstation Move controllers stuck to the bottom of the steampunk bioshock build?

It's a Frankenstein inspired build. you can see his relief in the lights in the side. Prob supposed to represent tesla stuff.

Agree.

How can you build something that detailed and thematic and then drop in a prefab CP or undisguised monitor?

Still some great work on these two, but they stopped right at the finish line.

The Tardis one is on here, but it's so old it's on the long forgotten examples page

Edit: Blog posts for the steam punk one: http://frankencade.blogspot.com/
pdf plans are on this page (hosted here on byoac) http://mirrors.arcadecontrols.com/OscarControls/unnamed/index.shtml

So 2 Tesla towers conveniently position around my crotch? Gotcha.

I just joined this group...and saw this post.  I built the "Frankencade" a hundred years ago.
I had a few woodworking tools and just kind of went for it.  What I didn't have was any clue how to
do the controls.  I thought the logic of using the prefab controller seemed like the way to go and allowed me
to focus on the rest of the thing.
I sent some pictures of it (taken in my dirty garage) to some friends and didn't think much about it.
I hadn't planned at that point to stick it out "in the world".
They shared the pictures with some friends...who did the same...and pretty soon it was showing up
quite a bit.  I learned 2 things.
1.  With no information, the collective "internet" can be both kind and harsh.  I was beat up for using the xarcade. I was beat up for not cleaning my garage. Wow. I had been happy that it worked and I could play Donkey Kong in my house.
2.  The fact that I was a "noob" building my first cabinet didn't seem to count for much.  I suppose the compliment was/is that I'd done a pretty decent job on the rest of it...so why not take the controls the rest of the way. Good point.  I'm working on that now.  I did a minor overhaul on the cabinet after all these years and the xarcade replacement is a placeholder for the home-brew controls that will go inside.  This site is helping me a great deal as I begin work on some new cabinets and pick the bug back up.

Welcome to BYOAC!

I'd love to see how it turns out after you re-do the CP. I'm impressed that this was your first build.

And there's nothing wrong with a messy garage.

Its a really nice cab. I have no doubts you could redo the CP and throw that xarcade in the wood chipper.
