Arcade games that deserve dedicated cabinet builds?
« on: November 24, 2015, 12:27:04 pm »
In a world where builders are cramming every game they can into their builds, (I'm guilty of this too  :) ) what game would you build (not buy) a dedicated cab for?

I'm not talking about a cab that only plays 4-way games...or a cab that only plays one-button games.

I want to know what game(s) you think is so unique or so good that you would be willing to build an entire cab just to play that ONE game.

I'll start. First games that come to my mind:

- Qbert - Needs a dedicated on-angle 4-way joystick
- Mario Bros. - No special reason other than it has a lot of replay value for a 2P game. I could play it until the cows come home.
- Joust - Same reason as Mario Bros. Plus it has awesome artwork.
- Zookeeper - TONS of good replay value and variety. Very cool artwork.
- Tutankhamun - Unique controls and just fun to play. However, hard as snot to master.

...and yes, I would consider building dedicated cabs just for the games above.

The sit down version? Because that would be one hell of a build!

Star Wars

Also if room was no object, I wouldn't mind having at least one dedicated positional gun game, though I don't know how I'd decide between Operation Thunderbolt and T2.

Also while we're talking about gun cabinets.... Maybe a House of the Dead, Time Crisis, or one of the Area 51/Maximum Force etc. clones that is out there might be fun to have.

And Yes this is a direct result of my option than Star Wars Yokes and Light Guns have NO business being on a MAME multi cab.

That would be an awesome build but I don't have the room for the sit down version.  I'm thinking a cabaret with the same color scheme as the sit down version.

For me it has to be a game that never had a dedicated cab in the first place. I have a JAMMA board called The Next Space that I would very much like to see a cabinet for.

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

For me it's also:

Rastan - Personal favorite
Joust - Same as Rastan, loved the cab / cp on this one
DoT sit down - super sweet cab
Tron - duh
Star Wars - See Tron
Rad Racer / Power Drift Sit down - one of my fav racing games
Hot Rod - Interesting Stand up 4P race cab..Cocktail style had a lot of fun with it.
Star Rider - Interesting "stuck a bike on the front of a cab" design, fun game

Good start for me.

I did that for my Macross PCB and have been very happy with it.

I have working Empire City 1931, Yie Ar Kung Fu, and Rush N' Attack PCBs with no homes that I would love to make one day.

Yeah, I wish I had the space to dedicate cabs to them. Maybe one day... that's why I have the boards now.

Ah yes, a game in which a race is never canceled. Even when there is a tornado on the track. :)

Money Idol Exchange for Neo Geo MVS. This is my absolute favorite game. I play it on my 168-in-1 cart in my mvs. I would definately make or remodel an mvs for this single game only. Whole cab would have dedicated side and front art plus marquee.

I know it's not an arcade game but I have had the thought in my head for a while now of how cool it would be to build a dedicated Jumpman arcade cab.
Particularly the C64 version.

It would be cool if it were done as if they had actually released one back in '83.

To me, that's a game with awesome replay value

WHY IS THIS CAN FULL OF WORMS?

Honestly, I'm just assuming this as like... I have a lot of disposable income and room, what dedicated cabs would I have?

Star Wars and Virtual On, obv.

Some of these would still be multi game cabs. If you have star wars then you can have empire, if it's non vector then you can have ROTJ as well without any extra buttons or anything. With super sprint you can have championship sprint and the original sprint games. I would probably add a button for nitro so i could have ironman stewarts too. But yeah I would like a cab for each of these set ups.

Hahahahahha! It's addicting. Like tetris. I swear if game boys could connect to the Internet when it originally came out, I would have won some sort of high score competition.

It's not an arcade game but god I wish it was. StarFox 64. Ramp up the difficulty, replaces lives with credit and stick it in a cockpit cabinet with a flight stick.

I remember reading that someone was trying to build a game for "The Last Starfighter".  If the game was at all fun or close in appearance to what was in the movie, it would be worth building a cabinet for it.  Especially if you live in a trailer park ;D

Air Combat 22 or After Burner

You sir, would be crazy a hero if you built a replica AirCombat 22 arcade machine.

I am a sucker for the artwork for Missile Command. I would go with that one.... Joust is awesome too.

I'm sure every game has it's fans. Each game, to someone, is something that should come in it's own dedicated cabinet, adorned with artwork akin to the original cabinet, or at least some form of art related to and celebrating the game within. A cabinet with just the controls that game used, not 2 joysticks, a trackball, and 7 or more action buttons per player.

For me, that game would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was a huge TMNT fan as a kid (til the cartoon went to the "red sky" seasons.) I always watched the attract mode when I saw one of these, and they were everywhere (this was back when I had to beg my parents for just one quarter.) I was happy when I discovered emulators and could play this in the late 90s, and later got the actual JAMMA board.

I'm actually thinking of building a scaled-down cabinet for that game (scaled down appropriately for a 14-inch arcade CRT I obtained.) Time will see if I will.

Serious question for you folks who want to build as opposed to restore: Why?

I know the obvious reasons: no cabs available (far too many common cabs cited in this thread), want a clean build from the start, etc.

So, perhaps an offshoot question: what game deserves a dedicated build where there is no existing cab in nature.

I build and restore depending on the situation. But I prefer building because it is an excuse to do a lot of woodworking.

Of cabs that don't exist?  If I was making a wishlist it would be a dedicated US Tatsunoko vs Capcom cabinet. The Japanese version had an arcade release (running on modified Wii hardware) but as far as I know it was just a candy cab conversion. I'd love the Ultimate All-Stars US version in a themed cab.

Thanks for asking the question most of us have probably been asking in our heads.

Super Spacefortress Macross

I'm sure there are ton's of conversions that deserved their own cab, that's why I like project's like Yotsuya's and WellFedGames' Multi Raiden.
