PC n64-like controller?
« on: December 31, 2003, 08:24:20 pm »
I'm thinking of adding Nintendo 64 support to my cab (so it'd be mame, jukebox, NES, SNES, and N64), and I'm looking for a controller that's close enough to the original nintendo 64 ones, but havn't had any luck so far.
Ideally, it'd have a directional pad, analog stick, something close enough to a start button, (at least) 6 buttons on top, 2 shoulder, and a trigger.

There are only 2 n64 adapters I'm aware of: the Adaptoid ($30 each but compatible with everything), and the generic PSX/N64 one (between $5 and 10, but I'd have to buy new controllers as well).

The closest controller I've found so far is this one:
Logitech ActionPad
but no trigger (or anything that could be used in lieu of a trigger).

Anybody know of a better product?

Why not just go with the Adaptoid?

http://www.wishtech.com/

I have one and it works like a charm.  Highly recommended.

Primarily cost considerations ($60 as I'd need two).

Your s.o.l. man... The distinctive n64 controller design is exclusive to the n64... we'll probably never see that particular layout again.

Aye, but I'm not looking for a replica, just a suitable substitute.
Here's what I've found so far: Logitech Rumblepad

and the Saitek p2500

Granted, neither are particularly pretty, but may work anyway. Still looking, tho.

I use a couple of Gravis Xterminator gamepads for N64 games. Works pretty well actually.

I have older ones, you can probably find them on ebay.

The problem with all the controllers shown spam is they won't work well for the n64 as it has the yellow "d" buttons.  Some of those are at a suitable angle.... but I've gotta be honest, you'd be better off biting the bullet and getting adaptors if your really serious about playing n64 games on your pc.

I agree. Get the adapter. I've got one that you can plug pretty much anything into and it was only around $25. Nothing like the real controller.

Do you have a link? I bought a PSX Contoller -> USB adapter and it works well enough that I started to think about the N64 too. If there's an adapter for multiple platforms, it'd be great to kill all those stones with one bird. It might save me some hacking many controllers and/or buying lots of adapters.

While many simple PSX games (e.g., r-type) play great with cabinet controls, the N64 Controller is damn near impossible to "emulate" on a cabinet CP. I'd much rather plug-in a real one -- specially since you can get 'em cheap at all those (generally) overpriced used game outlets.

gonna have to go with the other guys and say get an adapter...lik-sang is pretty much the best for adapters.  looks like they only have 1 n64 adapter version though since n64 is getting kinda old.  check it out:

Well, I bought it quite some time ago, at a local shop, and it's a Mac ADB adapter so unless you're running an older Mac it won't work for you. If memory serves it has ports for N64, PSX, PC Gameport, Atari 2600, and Sega Genesis. There might be one more I'm not thinking of. I think the same company makes a USB version that might work with a PC. I'll see if I can find a link.

A quick Google search reveals that it's called a Joyport by a company called Kernel Productions that now appears to be out of business.

A real shame, it's a great little device. I certainly plan to include it in my upcoming cabinet project.
