Attract Mode stretched, but LXDE and MAME ok

I've got my Dell 1708 17" monitor working with my RPi2B.  No black borders, resolution seems great, screen is set to vertical.  The only problem is that the Attract Mode frontend (verticools layout) is squished... the font, the wheel art, its all consistent. I can't seem to be able to affect the frontend dimensions in the usual config files. Meanwhile the desktop and the actual Mame4all look great.

Any advice?

one odd wrinkle, the background video snaps I have configured play normally.

Comparing the look to other layouts, I think its in the layout.nut file.
In it, it says"
"For use in a 640x240 resolution. We use this strange resolution to enhance the front rendering quality in 15khz"

FIXED

went into the layout.nut and changed "fe.layout.width=" to 1024 and "fe.layout.height=" to 1280

the elements are bigger and a little more packed in but the aspect ratio is spot on and it runs smoothly!
