SMB Paint Color
« on: August 18, 2015, 01:00:26 pm »
Can anyone share what brand/color codes they've used to get the nice blue SMB color? Also, is there much difference between this color and the color used ok DK cabinets? I found the color code for Benjamin Paints for a DK cab.

If you see a blue Super Mario Bros, its most likely a nintendo conversion kit that original was a DK or a Popeye.  Thats what known as a Nintendo Vs system. They were drop in kits to retrofit older nintendo uprights to the newer games so ops could refresh the games without refreshing the whole cabinet. You'll find there was also dedicated versions of the UniSystem and DualSystem that include games like SMB and others, (Vs Golf, Goonies, Dr Mario, etc...)

Paint colours for the DK Blue can be found here:

And more info on the Vs System can be found here:

I used this for Janky Kong and it was pretty much spot on.

Chance's post above pretty much covers it all. But I've tried Behr's - liquid Blue and it is incredibly close. I have held the paint swatch up to my real DK and it is spot on for color. The challenge is getting the sheen correct. Semi-gloss is probably best.

This paint is readily available at Home Depot and you can take a free swatch home to play with it if need be.

Home Depot and Lowes also offers paint samples where they mix it for about $3 and you get a small container where you can try it to see if it cures the way you want to.

From my experience (and I've painted a ton of cabs).  Satin is the best finish.

Good Luck!

I forgot to mention that if you end up going with a laytex paint that you have to roll on, then you should also use a product called Floetrol. Also available at Home Depot.

It's a laytex paint additive that allows the paint to dry slower allowing the little peaks left behind the roller time to level out. When combined with a dense foam roller, the results are very smooth.

Thanks, all. And I'm definitely a pro-floetrol guy. used it on the last two cabs and loved it.

Another quick question...I can't find any pictures of the back of DK/SMB...is it black to match the top/bezel, or is it blue to match the sides?

If by "back" you mean basically the door, then yes it is black like the top. You can seem some pics of a SMB here on John's page:

There are really only three finishes to a Nintendo cab. The base colour (which isn't paint, its that laminate surface), a Gloss Black found on the inside front of the side panels as well as the base stand, and a matte black found on the back, inside the edges of the speaker grill, and the upper areas of the inside of the cab surrounding the monitor.
