Going sticky crazy
« on: December 17, 2003, 08:09:44 pm »
Pretty soon I'm going to need to scroll in the main forum just to get to new posts.  I think all of those sticky notes include important information, but some of them seem to be misplaced.  Like the T-shirt one, it seems, could come into this forum.  Or maybe we could have a forum of nothing but stickies where they wouldn't get lost, but wouldn't clutter up the main forum.  Six just seems like too many, considering that many of them have been up there for months.

Down with the stickies! If it deserves to be sticky it should be in the faq.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

Stickies are alot easier to manage than the hard coded FAQ pages.

Hmm... Maybe a forum of FAQ posts would be in order.

A newbie is more likely to see a sticky than read a FAQs. :-\

Some newbies, however, don't even look at anything before posting. >:(  Can't stop that with a FAQ or stickies. :(

As long as the stickies don't grow above 5-7 per forum, I'm okay with them.  My browser window size + default font size, plus the aracdecontrols headers, combine so that many fill a page, so a simple PageDown gets past that to the new posts; I find a pagedown is easier/quicker than scrolling with mouse wheel or arrow keys.

OTOH, I start from (near) the bottom of the first page of each forum, anyway.  That way I have not read the newest stuff if I have to leave so the nest time I come all the stuff I haven't read in is one block, and I have little need to worry about losing threads I haven't read because I didn't get to them.  ("If I read and didn't reply, then all threads older than that one I already read or ignored, usually.") [shrug]

My 2 cents.

I agree with the "stickie" posts removal!

They should have a propper link in the FAQ or a section here in this forum called maybe "Stickie Posts" or "Permanent Posts"...

I think that only most stickies should make their way to a dedicated forum.  Stuff like the T-shirts and the Nominate Most Inspirational... (after they've been up for a couple weeks, at least) should be moved.  The Read All Information and Made A Faq thread actually serves a purpose sitting up there at the top of the Main Forum forever since it answers so many questions that would get asked repeatedly.  When I originally made started this thread there were six stickies in the main forum.  I think it's down to five now, but most of them could go, I think.

The word from Saint is that they will be integrated into the FAQ during the site revamp.
