potentiometer question
« on: April 22, 2015, 01:27:41 pm »
Greetings,

Ran into a wall here. :banghead:

I am trying to wire a pot that I bought at the store to a circuit board for my computer speaker control panel. See pics.  Here's the problem:

The computer speakers volume control had 6 tabs and not 3 tabs like the pot that I bought (see picture). Is there such thing as a double pot? It was going to be hard enough to figure out where the 3 wires from the pot to the circuit board went. Now I have to figure out 6?  What am I missing?

I suspect that the 6 tab one is a stereo pot.

You are correct.  I'm made a few volume controls over the years, and those are fun ones.

The middle tab is the wiper. Connect your wires to this and one of the other tabs. Which one depends whether you want the resistance to increase when you turn the knob left or right. Most circuits also have the third tab connected so that if the wiper fails, you just get full resistance instead of an open circuit.
