The burning question for me is how well will it play some of the classics such as tempest and defender......

Probably the same, since they both use the same versions of Mame4All/AdvanceMAME and romsets.

I didn't know how well it did on the Rev 1.

DaOld Man:
If anyone wants to use the composite AV jack, here is the method to switch it from hdmi to composite out:
https://bhavyanshu.me/tutorials/force-raspberry-pi-output-to-composite-video-instead-of-hdmi/03/03/2014/
Also, on a "regular" av cable (I used one from an old video camera I had lying around), on the cable when plugged into the Pi, red is video and yellow and white are audio.
Yellow is video on anything else I have ever tried, don't know why Pi swapped the red and yellow, but it's no big deal as long as you remember it.

I'm 90% sure that the 5v GPIO pin out puts what ever Amps lest over from operations. I don't know what the USB can out put safely. Who many amps do you need? I can post a question on the Pi forums to find out.
