Ok, I broke down and ordered a new Pi

Still testing it, but yeah, you do see Linux loading screens, especially after quiting.
I don't have Stepmania, but it can run Quake III Arena, so I would think so.

IF you don't mind waiting for a few weeks for it to arrive you can get them on EBAY from China for about $7 -- I just received one of these the other week for the GameStick I had bought on clearance and it works fine for connecting the GameStick to my Acer Monitor and also has the audio output for a cheap set of Logitech speakers. ( I originally got a $5 HDMI to DVI convertor but that lacked the audio and the gamestick didn't have separate audio outputs and doesn't support the $1 USB Soundcard from China either ! ) - Linkie to the one I purchased - ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/221588431594?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&var=520447402104&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT )
Note : THe one I got is Female HDMI since it was for the Gamestick -- For the Pi I believe you'd need Male HDMI but they have those also for $5 ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-Male-to-VGA-Converter-Adapter-With-Audio-USB-Cable-1080P-for-PC-Lucky-/371246740114?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item567007b292 )

Hm... I'm going to also need you to test the proper shutdown operation when hooked up to a HDTV USB port as the power source. I've currently got a dedicated flat screen running stepmania with a laptop and it'd be swell to eliminate the laptop...

You'll have to search the PI forums but there is a way to direct most of the console output to "null" so you just see a black screen.

I've got a recommended 5v 2A charger powering the Pi2. What does the USB port output in terms of Amps?
