Gotta ask a dumb question because I'm very ignorant about the neogeo hardware scene.  Is there a good reason to get the neosd over a standard multi cart?  I know the mvs/aes doesn't have a lot of games and there isn't a ton of homebrew either.

Well the multi cart is poor at best, They are mostly bad roms and hacks and many of them have glitches (sound and visual).

As for the neo Library its actually quite large but most of the games people have never heard of or dont like.

I think people just think of the neo as a fighters console with KOF, GMOTW etc.

As for the homebrew there is a bit but admittedly not a huge amount.
Ngdev team have released a few titles including the new Krout Buster (which looks amazing) but other than them I dont know of any other creators.

Thanks for the info.  I've been thinking of getting into neogeo but I haven't looked into it much.  I just checked and I can get a working mvs for 50 bucks on ebay and I have a $10 coupon burning a hole in my pocket.  I've always wanted to build a super gun, so maybe now is the time.  I'd like to do aes, but it's just too rich for my blood.

Yeah there are definitely sleepers in the library, but if I'm being honest with myself I'm sure I'd just play the various metal slugs 90% of the time.

I got the 120-in-1 cart and I haven’t had much issues with it so far. It’s got most of the games I’m into, including Twinkle Star Sprites, which a few of these Multicarts don’t have. It doesn’t have Windjammers though, which is a big deal. Viewpoint also. :(

Yeah, it’s got some hacked games alongside the non-hacked versions. But the proper versions all seem fine. I haven’t noticed anything weird. It’s cheap too. I think I paid $80 for it when it was first released.

Eventually I’ll get the NeoSD or Darksoft MultiMVS, but they’re so damn expensive. I’m more interested in the Multi CPS1 and Sega System16B Multi that I’m saving up for now. The 120-in-1 is fine for me right now.

Our favorite oriental website has a few different ones... 161 in 1 but also 120 in 1 and 150 in 1.  The other two don't have their complete gamelists posted so I don't have a clue if they are better or worse.

Here's a comparison guide I googled for. https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/MVS_Multicart

Seems like a pretty good outline of the games lists between the different carts.

So if you are buying in I will attempt to expand a little :p

So yeah Neo Geo is expensive to buy into.
The NGCD is the cheapest way into it and the AES is the most expensive with the MVS sat in the middle.

That being said some games can be picked up for the MVS at reasonable prices.
I got Metal Slug for £40 and Puzz Bob for £20 which I later found out was a hack job but it works so ya know....
But yeah watch out for bootlegs MVS has lots!!

The multi carts are playable but they do have issues.
I can only comment on the 161 as that is the only one I have.
They seem to be hit and miss regarding how good the one you get will be.
Mine has a graphical glitch in the top corner and occasional sound glitches but overall nothing to major really everything I have tried on it is playable but the glitch in the corner does my head in!

I have managed to get a photo so you can see:

It basically flashes doing that, Originally I thought it was my TV but its not present with anything else so its defo the cart.

But I have heard of people having games freeze and other odd problems.

Regarding games apart from Slug and the main fighters some of my faves worth checking out are Neo Bomberman, Super Dodgeball, Top Hunter and Mutation Nation.

Theres obv many others but those are some of my personal faves :)

Oh and if you get a MVS be sure to get a Unibios for it! They are inexpensive but worth every penny!!

I'm gonna have to think on this one.  The 161 doesn't have a few of my favorite games in it like Waku Waku 7 and Super Spy.  It looks like the 138 in 1 actually has the most unique games... but it has compatibility issues and is essentially a flash cart.  It's a bit more expensive too....

Still think it'd be fun to do a super gun though.... I've got enough parts lying around to do it... I'd just need a scart connector for my up scaler and some sort of case to put it in.

Thanks for the help guys.

Anytime dude.

I really want to build a supergun.

I brought my CMVS though, I would link the company but I dont think they are in business anymore which is a shame tbh because its pretty good.

Yeah the 161 can be hit or miss as it's one of the older carts to have come out. The 120 is one of the newer versions, which is why i opted for it when it was released, and doesn't have this issue at all. It's practically perfect, but just lacking a bunch of the games.

I have been wanting to build a MVS wall mounted skinny cab for a while. Maybe after I get my DK restore done this summer.

Any way, I added the Terraonion products to the list on the first post. Including the PC engine and AES/MVE carts.

The prices on mvs motherboards are too cheap right now.  I think I see a supergun build in my future, just for the hell of it.

Hey on a related note there were some amazon "smart links" at the end of that article and check it out:

https://www.amazon.com/SunniMix-Machine-Optical-Reading-Sega-Consoles/dp/B07K8M3S91/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=GDEMU&qid=1559877090&s=home-garden&sr=1-3-catcorr

Under 80 bucks.... that's pretty decent.

I've got a ton of credit, might pick one up.

I would get an original mate.

At least you will have some help if required and the ability to update. :)

Can you guys remove the link? It’s a Knock off version of the GDMU. No judgment, I ordered one for every cheeper on a Chines sites we all love. At the same time I think the least we can do is not link to the bootlegs.

As to the time in the USB-GDrom. That’s nuts. I was thinking about buying his FZ-10USB. This gives me second thoughts.

Sure guys I'll get right on that... let me order one... oh yeah, I can't, because, apparently the guy that makes the official one doesn't like making money.  Guess I'll just buy the one that's actually available for purchase.

I'll remove the link even though the only way to get one is via clones.

I admit they are a PITA to get but if you want one you can get one easily.

I have a GDEMU and a Rhea neither of which were difficult.

You just have to check when his order windows are and be on when he opens them.

I agree with you that if I was him I would probably do things differently, but he did do all the work to develop the thing and that his call to make. That said, I bought a cheep clone my self.

Guys this has nothing to do with his choice of business but rather the availability of the device.  You can get the clones, you can't get his.  Also no, I'm not waiting in line like they are concert tickets or something when there are alternatives readily available.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, that's just how supply and demand works.... if you don't meet demand someone else will.

Nah I get it and dont blame you.

When I got mine I had similar thoughts but after doing the research I decided I wanted an original and was willing to subscribe to his feed and wake up in the middle of the night to order one.

I woke up 5 mins before the time he stated he was opening orders, Logged into my computer and 6 mins later placed a order and went back to sleep.

Its a pain in the ass but its worth it to have the higher quality, update capacity and the customer service imo.

I’m in agreement. I have never bought a Dream cast and some how ended up with three. My plane is to use the clone in one for now and to sell, trade, or give it away at some point when I get an office one.

BTY, my clone has arrived and I can’t wait to install it.

Yeah what's with all the dreamcasts floating around?  I'm guessing all the hipsters are tired of saying it's the most underrated console ever and sold theirs.  ;)  Anyway, it's nice to have options.  I didn't even know the rhea drive existed I'm so out of the loop.  Gonna play my Saturn until the drive is destroyed though.

Yeah, I'm intrigued as well.  I might look into getting this later on, since my paypal money is reserved for some big arcade purchases coming up.

But one thing that saw recently is Bob from RetroRGB has this running on a "triple bypass" modded Genesis 3.  Essentially making the Genesis 3 (Jr) actually worth owning now, minus the 32X support. The Genesis 3 has a cool aesthetic, but it lacked the add-on features of the original models, so Sega CD support was out of the question.

The Mega SD will be a goldmine for TO. People have been clamoring for a Sega CD ODE for a long time. The physical hardware is hard to come by and can be very temperamental. I had to replace the laser in my first gen unit and I say a little prayer every time I play a game on it that it will function properly. LOL!

One question I have about the MegaSD is whether or not it will be able to play Japanese/European Mega CDs on a North American Genesis. Thoughts?

I still want a proper ODE but this is a excellent alternative!

As for the different regions I seem to remember reading it supports all bios’s so it should be region free.

But you will also need a region free MD to pair it with.

Neat, but I'm failing to see the point of that device.  If you're about "original hardware" and all, that's cool, and I get you, but this isn't original hardware.  Like all old SEGA systems, with their charm being in the wealth of 'decent for their time' arcade ports, the only le gem you're gonna find on SEGA CD is Final Fight.  If you haven't played Snatcher on an emulator by now never will (and I'm in that crowd).  I say this as someone that had a nearly complete library in the 90s.  Sonic CD is weird and has been redone. etc etc.  Also, you've been able to play actual SEGA CDs on an original Xbox for like 15 years now.

It's the price that kills it.  Imho a flash cart, no matter how fancy, should never exceed $100.  The reason is quite simple... once you go past that $100 mark, on most systems it's just cheaper to buy the original hardware and the games you want to play and then buy it again if the drive ever wears out.

The model 1 sega cd is kinda rare but a model 2 can be had for around $100 all day long.  Then you burn your discs if you don't want to buy the games ….. if the laser goes bad you can buy two more before you approach the cost of this new cart.

I'll also re-iterate the point that just because it's fpga doesn't mean it isn't emulation.  It works at the hardware level, but you still have to know how the original chip works, and since this is done via reverse engineering we'll never know for sure how accurate that is.  It's different when it's just doing the carts... those basically have some chips used for storage and that's it.

Long story short, expensive neogeo and tg-16 carts I totally get because the real hardware/software is outrageously expensive, but a $300 cart for the snes? or even stupider the genesis?  Yeah that's dumb.

Yeah, I agree with this.  But I still buy them anyway. Yeah I'm dumb. :lol

**Actually, there's more than just playing the entire game library that makes these flash carts more worth the price.

A few quick examples I can think of are:
- Being able to play romhacks on original hardware.  This is great for a lot of hacks that actually improve on the game, I'm not talking about having Super Pikachu Bros. type hacks, where they completely botch the game up and throw whatever they want in 'em.
I'm talking about the hacks that are tasteful to improving the QoL of the gameplay.  One big example is Castlevania Simon's Quest. There are great hacks out there that make the cryptic engrish easier to figure out. Or a hack that speeds up the annoying transitions from Day to Night, or a hack that adds a World Map.    There's a lot of these QoL hacks, like changing Link's voice in Minish Cap to Wind Waker's voices.  Or swapping the tinny condensed Final Fantasy game music on the GBA ports of IV, V, and VI.

Sure, these are not authentic to the original releases.  But they do add a bit of a fresh breath into the old favourites that gives you some more life out of them.

And that's just QoL hacks. I didn't even mention translation hacks that gives you a chance to play a lot of the titles that didn't get released on our region.

- Trying out Experimental hacks like SA-1 conversions for increasing the framerate of slow-down titles, or MSU audio for the SNES is a nice way to experience your favourite games with high quality music. This is really beneficial to the more moody games, like Super Metroid, or Link to the Past.

- New homebrew type games being developed today can be played on your original hardware. Case in point, I've been playing Micro Mages (released this year) on NES recently.  Yeah, I ordered the physical copy of the game which hasn't arrived yet, but being able to play this on a flashcart in the meantime is a pretty great option. There are quite a few high quality homebrew titles out there.

- There are still a lot of "premium" games for every system that fetch a hefty price. Try finding titles like Earthbound, Final Fight Guy, Mega Man X3, Wild Guns, etc... for under $150.  At that point, you can either spring for a cheap conversion cart, feeding that scummy market, or just buy a flashcart and get all the other benefits that come with it.  At least with flashcarts its people actually figuring out the hardware, building from scratch, adding additional features like save states, high score saving for games that don't have it, fancy graphical interfaces, or gameplay statistics...rather than just a bunch of dirty conversionists with a soldering iron.

BUT -- all in all, I do agree, these flashcarts are getting ridiculous in price.  I'm sure they could be cheaper, but demand is so high, and competition is practically non-existent that the creators can charge whatever and people will flock.  It is what it is. I've been trying to see the silver lining for a lot of these devices so that I can keep my sanity.

In the end, I'm probably going to pass on the MegaSG.  There's a real Sega CD ODE in the works that is more of what I'd be interested in.
Like pbj said, it makes no sense really to buy a device that is just doing emulation under-the-hood.
