EIZO EV2730Q 26.5" square LCD MONITOR!!!
« on: November 18, 2014, 06:33:06 pm »
Doesn't look like anyone has been talking about this new monitor that is coming out soon.  Just read about it on a virtual pinball forum, figured some of you may be interested.  I know I am!  It's a perfectly square LCD monitor which to me would be a very decent compromise for playing vertical and horizontal games, a better solution than a widescreen IMHO.

http://www.eizoglobal.com/products/flexscan/ev2730q/index.html

Only two negatives I can see:

- what will be the lag?  It's 5ms but that really can mean anything
-  this thing will probably be super expensive right?  It seems to be targeting the professional business field, so that can't be cheap :(

I am praying it's under 700 bucks but I doubt it, I would guess... $899 min, probably $1100.

I see potential. I hope  to see more of this, as well as the return of the 4:3.

If my maths is correct, this would be a screen size of about 19 inches by 19 inches. Pretty darn healthy size for an upright cab. Put it behind tinted glass, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell if it is a vertical or horizontal cab.

Haha, we'll considering I would be just as well with a used CRT at this point, I can't imagine putting more than a couple hundred bones down on any LCD. If the right project for this monitor really came up, you could probably drain me of another hundred or so, but that would require there be no other good options.

Thing is, I keep hearing year after year how so many aspect ratios are gonna be available to us in the next year or so. Whether it is due to improved LCD electronics or oled or 3d printing or custom monitor factories in china or magical paint that can be display video like a monitor. I've grown skeptical that we are really gonna see great aspect ratio monitors for a normal price anytime soon. It's a shame because I think it is a missed market, even aside from our hobby.

When I was younger,  I carved cheap into my skates.
Viewsonic sells their 19" for $99.99.
ASUS for $83.99

Neither are the 1:1 ratio the eizo pureport to be, put I'll compare these to evaluate the price.

*If* the input lag is low and *if* the blacks are good and *if* the viewing angles are good then I'd probs go to up to or around $400. But I honestly cant see this going for that price.

I don't have a build in mind for it but I can possibly see one in the future if it meets the above criteria.

Response time is 5ms per spec sheet on that link.

Response times I don't think reflect properly the input lag.  I have no idea of the industry standards, but I've seem 2ms response time monitors show more lag than ones above 5ms.

I need a larger screen than the 19" and CRT SVGA doesn't seem to be much of a solution (and too many complaints and super expensive IMHO).  I could live with a widescreen 29"-32" range LED but... it wouldn't fit in my existing cab soooo with a 27" LCD, that fits but effectively, it renders most vertical to a super small view that IMHO just looks too odd in such a big cab.

So understanding this, IF the response time is "good enough" and if the blacks are black enough, I'd be willing to plunk down $600 easy.

It's a custom size, no way will it be that cheap :(

Most specs are bunk anyway, but response is the only thing measured in time on that spec sheet.

Squares are not a custom endeavor.  4 right angles; all the same size.  They may have to retool their machine, or just open a square LCD factory.  I refuse to accept that a square is such a wild departure from reality that I have to pay an excessive premium.  A LCD shaped like the batman logo would be custom.

It is a great time to be alive.  1:1 Square LCDs would prove that, 1:1 Batman shaped LCDs would make it greater.

I feel like a bit of a wanker now.  How did I miss the 26.5?  I'm not an unreasonable person

Here is a list of prices for 27" LCDs
Acer        $180
BenQ        $200
Viewsonic   $220
Samsung     $259

This would be perfect for the standup mame machine I'm going to build. I will buy it if it isn't stupidly expensive, which it probably will be.

I don't see the benefit of this monitor for our hobby, as the original monitors were 4:3 and this one is 1:1.

The benefit is that we can't find LCD's at 4:3 larger than 20" and the CRT monitors will sooner or later be gone.  So these are seen a potentially better solution than a widescreen monitors that really sucks for vertical games or fitting a large one horizontally in a standard cab.

Picture a rotating monitor build, but narrower and simpler because you don't have to physically turn the monitor.

Figure you can use either the entire vertical or horizontal space for your game and that would leave 240 pixels on each side for displaying bezel art either on the sides or top\bottom depending on the game setup (ie. 1920x1440 or 1440x1920 game resolution) - and play both horizontal and vertical games on the same setup without the need to add rotating the monitor.

Ok, I guess those are good benefits.
All I know is I'm gonna hold into my 27" try sync for as long as I live because
I have the ultimate in vertical and horizontal play right now.

Hi everyone,

So last Friday, I sent the following email to the company asking for more info:

To:  (company contact)

I have come across a link to this new monitor (FlexScan EV2730Q) your company will be releasing soon.  Has a price been determined?  Will this be available directly from you or will we be able to order from vendors?  If through vendors, are you aware if there will be a Canadian vendor?

I do not represent any company in particular.  Rather I am a member of an arcade machines community that are interested in your product as potential replacements for home-built PC-based arcades, who are presently using 4:3 ratio 25"-27" CRT monitors, which unfortunately are becoming rather scarce. This new monitor your company has developed may potentially fit our needs.  Although widescreen LCD's can be used, unfortunately the viewing area ends up being too small due to the sizes of these arcade machines and the resolutions these games run at.

My appreciation to your company for coming out with this product, widescreen monitors have their place however there is certainly a need for a monitor with a square aspect ratio.  I am looking forward to testing your monitor, you have a probable client here :).

Hoping to hear from you

Robert C.

Above was edited due to embarrassing auto-correct iPad spelling...

Anyway, I got this reply today:

Robert,

Thank you for contacting EIZO. Please be advised, no release information or pricing is available at this time for the EV2730Q. Often times, our headquarters in Japan announce products and release dates that are not available in the united states. The EV2730Q is currently one of those products. We expect this product to become available in the US sometime in the first quarter of next year. Once released, you will need to purchase this display through one of our resellers since EIZO does not sell direct.

Regards,

EIZO Sales

I removed the persons name in case they didn't want it to be posted.

Anyway, not much in additional details aside from sometime in the first quarter but it gives those interested a time frame into looking at this further.

The aspect ratio is enticing, but at the end of the day, I'd never buy another LCD that didn't have G-Sync or an equivalent at this point.

I can't stand playing arcade games with tearing or stuttering. It's just unacceptable.

Looking at their other monitors, those are all in the $800 - $1,100 range :( For that price, you are better off just buying a 46" TV and using a square portion of it like Maximus...

That's fine if you're doing a scratch build or have the internal space to gut your cab, but if you don't, it's not a viable option.
