Oh wow. That link also reminded me it's been 5 years since I've upgraded the bios! So I think there are several updates since then. I will update that and report.

Currently using Windows 7 pro on that machine as well since the last windows version I had on this machine was an OEM so it would not transfer to the new MOBO.  :( Thanks Microsoft... it was paid for but since it was on another OEM HD/mobo that will never be used again it can't be transferred. Was a bummer but whatever. New OS works well. 

Ok will upgrade bios and give it another shot. If that doesn't resolve it then I'll buy new 2gb modules.

Apparently I did have the bios upgraded fully even back then. So I've beat my head against the wall a bunch... I guess I'll bite the bullet and buy 2 sticks of 2gb each. Is gskill better than corsair? Or does it really matter?
