How to rescan for new games but keep game list name changes from resetting

Someone must have asked this.
I fixed some misspellings on my mame game list and saved my game list under preferences. Then added a few missing marquees into the directory. Checked off rescan for new media and then went back in to find my game list changes were gone.  How does one add new games, snaps, etc.. to MA without resetting the whole custom list?
