I hacked my PS1 Controller. How can I test it?
« on: December 12, 2003, 04:45:37 pm »
OK, I connected my arcade joystick/buttons to the appropriate contacts on my PS1 pad.  Obviously I'd like to test the connection prior to connecting it to my system.

Quick newbie question - where should I connect the ends of the multimeter in order to get a good test?  Should i have the button/joystick depressed? Or should I just connect the grounds to the ends?  I'm a total electronics newbie, sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Thanks!

Set your multimeter to test resistance.  Connect one end to the solder point for a button, connect the other end to the ground solder point.  You should be reading a high/infinite resistance.  Press the button or move the joystick to the desired direction.  The measured resistance should drop to near zero.  If the resistance only drops to 200 Ohms or so, you probably have a cold solder joint or some other connection problem.  Rinse and repeat for all buttons/joystick directions.

Thanks for the response  :)

Is there any effective way to confirm that I got the location of the stick/buttons correctly?  (eg.  That I didn't accidently wire joystick UP to joystick DOWN?)

you could try on your psx, there is no risk.
Dreamcast is riskay but psx ports never fry or anything(I test all the time no problem).

Thanks SNAAKE.

Another quick question.  The 'analog' button.  Do people normally have a dedicated button for this, or do you guys have the 'select' button do double-duty?

Thanks.
