I remember when some of my friends got the Wico 3rd party joystick for their Atari's.  I hated that thing.  Ironic now because my favorite arcade stick is a wico leaf.

The ONLY thing that sucked about the Atari Joystick was when the sleeve would come off the stick, and you were stuck with that skinny white plastic stick.... not that it prevented us from playing, mind you....

in the 80's I used to "cheat" at Spy Hunter on my C64 by driving along the right edge...

I also used to use the Atari controller with my C64 and sega master system although with only one button available.

I had Choplifter on the C64 as a cartrage.

currently I am a Steam/Humble Bundle addict but I rarely play any of the games.   

I come here everyday yet have 5 cabs in my garage I never touch.

I can never do this.  Games have the same place in my mind that books and movies do, it's all about the story.  Once I've beaten the game / read the book / seen the movie I can't turn around and play/read/watch it again right away.  Time has to pass and things have to get fuzzy for me.  Then I go back and re-live the story again.

600 hours over 2 years is less than an hour a day.  I didnt spend 600 hours playing the story over and over, most of it was spending (and still is) grinding for gears. The adventure most is just a grind fest, the story has always been a joke in Diablo.

Completely missed the point of my statement.  I play the game for the story.  Once the story is done, I'm done with the game.  I cannot understand "most of it was spending (and still is) grinding for gears".  To me that would be like watching the same 5 minute clip of a movie on infinite repeat.  Or maybe like the 10 hour Gandalf nod.

My brother did that ---smurfette--- move on me once when I was about to sweep him on NHL'94. He had an undefeated season going, then we played head-to-head in the Finals. Right before I was about to win Game 4, in frustration he hit reset to preserve his perfect season. We listened to "The Crow" Soundtrack as we played. Good times.

Diddy Kong racing was awesome.  So was the battle mode in Donkey Kong 64.

I used to play with a kid who would get pissed when losing and throw the controller.  Somehow it would nearly always hit the NES and reset the thing just before the game would save our results.  "oops, sorry, didn't mean that" every time.

Yeah, I stopped playing with him, because as said above that's a total ---smurfette--- move.  Especially on NES games that clear their save memory easily.  Nothing quite like losing a whole season of Baseball Stars because the kid who lost a single game reset the system as it was trying to save.

She spent weeks playing Sims 2, making happy cute families and one day I decided to make a family of extremely ugly people using a glitch in the character creator. Wrote them a backstory as a runaway circus sideshow looking for suburban love. I had them all marry and breed like rabbits with her pretty people. The look of horror on her face when she saw her cute little people not only intermingled with InsectMan, NardFace and Roadkill, but birthing mutant offspring.....priceless.

When Genesis first came out I bought one with Tommy Lasorda baseball because I was desperate for a new baseball game.  I think I paid $300 for everything including a second controller.  After a weekend of buyer's remorse I returned it.   I looked at Triple Play on youtube and it looks like the games got a lot better later on.  I may have to try that on an emulator.

Back in '90, a friend of mine showed me a game he had gotten off a BB for his Commodore 64 (actually, a friend of his got it for him, because none of uu could afford a modem). It was a German game called "Party Girls".

After starting the game by typing Load "PartyG",8,1 you were presented with a digitized screen capture from a porno, rendered in full 320 × 200, 16 colors glory. Pressing the button on the joystick took you to a screen on a naked couple getting it on. Besides the male and female blocky characters, there was a stamina meter. To beat the level, you had to keep the stamina meter at the top of the screen while the couple engaged in action. In order to keep the meter high, you had to - yep, you guessed it, rock the joystick back and forth (in retrospect, a push-pull joystick would have been a better controller). Gently at first, then with more fury and speed the longer the game went. You knew you were doing fine because the girl would call out "Ja!" (via on-screen text) if you were at the top. If you lost steam, she would get mad and say "Schlaffi!!!" (which Wikipedia tells me is German for "wimp"). Beating the level would give you a different picture and a new girl (actually, the same girl with different colored sprites for hair).

I have never beaten a Metroid game.

I finally beat it on my GBA a few years back...looong overdue.

Madden is too complicated for me now. 

I actually went on the internet a few years ago to memorize Pac Man patterns.

I find that most games on modern consoles are too complicated for me now, or more accurately, have too high of a learning curve for me to want to bother.  I get some free time and I want to play some games, not sit there and spend 3 hours figuring out how to make Solid Snake move.

Back in '90, a friend of mine showed me a game he had gotten off a BB for his Commodore 64 (actually, a friend of his got it for him, because none of uu could afford a modem). It was a German game called "Party Girls".

I also have to add to the list...15 years ago when I was working a call center that received very few calls I amused myself by working on a spreadsheet where I was trying to list my favorite game that started with the letter A, then B, then C, etc.  My top 26 favorite games by alphabet.  Yup, I'm a nerd.

I also have video game OCD.  I have to see everything in the game.  Games like the Diablo series, I can't grind, I need to reveal all of the fog on each and every map I enter, every time.  RPGs, good lord, I love them but I have to try every side quest, open every door.  It is insanity.

I traded in my Sega Saturn and 41 games to get an N64 with Mario64 and Pilot Wings64. Games I traded in included Dragon Force, Bomberman, Legend of Oasis, and Guardian Heroes.

It took some time, but I eventually bought all the Saturn stuff again, it would have been much cheaper to buy N64 stuff

This..I'm 44 and STILL am kinda embarrassed to admit that I play video games.  After all these years people still think games are just for kids and are a waste for time for anyone else.  I guess after a certain age, you are supposed to bring your kids to soccer practice, read more books, and follow the Wall Street Journal..you know mature stuff..LOL  ---fudgesicle--- that.  To each their own.  I have way too much technology OCD to ever read a book..it couldn't happen.  ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- my tv is on every moment of the day when I am home..mostly for background noise.  It has always bugged me that my hobby is looked down upon, while reading is 100% accepted by everyone.

You have to figure out how to let go of the hold others' opinions have on your actions.  For years that was a huge obstacle for me.  There are so many things I wish I had done or wish I had done sooner.  I would be worried about having to fight with all the people around me.  Eventually I just decided, ---fudgesicle--- it, if I consider it a positive thing, and it's not hurting anyone, and it's not negatively affecting my family in some way, I'm going to do it.  And if the people around me want to give me a hard time then I'll just stop answering the phone.  I don't care if relatives say I'm crazy, or if the neighbors see me working out in the yard, or if people give me crap because I'm not fitting into the box they want me in.  You just can't live your life that way and be happy.

Eventually I noticed that it doesn't even matter what you're doing.  You could be going back to college, studying a martial art, building an addition on the house, anything.  The people around you that are doing nothing will try to find ways to pull you back to their level.  Ignore them and do your thing.

I certainly have nothing against emulation.  With that said, there is not a SNES emulator on the planet that gets audio 100% right, mostly due to the analogue filters attached to the SNES's sound outputs. Some try various tricks to get close, but none of them match it as closely as other emulators match their hardware counterparts.

Does that matter?  Not really.  They're still a perfectly adequate way to play games.

The SNES, for me, still remains my favourite console of all time - for no reason other than it was the console I played at the height of my love of gaming, and has the highest nostalgia factor for me.  The audio was a massive part of that, and when I play emulated games that I remember playing on original hardware, the experiences don't match (particularly when talking about the audio).

So I get when people say they don't like SNES emulators, because I don't like them either.  That's not to say I don't fire up an emulator when I'm lazy and can't be stuffed walking down to my games room and loading a ROM into my Super Wildcard DX (first world problems), but merely that I just prefer the real deal.

Upon reflection, I think my comment about your butthurt came off meaner spirited than intended.  I think we've all been mildly shocked at the amount of quality work you've invested in some of the projects you ultimately abandoned.

I started with a blank concrete slab basement and built a gameroom with brand new framing, electrical, subflooring, drywall, moldings, and glow carpet, two zone dimmed track lighting and black light, and filled it with games all of which were dead to one degree or other when I bought them.  Did 100% of the room work myself with building skills I mostly didn't have two years ago.  If that's not a successful project in pbj's eyes then his judgement means nothing anyway.

Ahh.  Good ole MUD's.  My first experience with online gaming.  I was addicted to a MUD called Moongate (now Materia Magica).  I log in every so often to see if my char is still there.

I've played Moongate once or twice, I think.  Dragonrealms was pretty sophisticated, to the point that scripting and puzzle solving could be pretty elaborate.  No dice rolls showed, but great text to paint the picture.  I would guess in its prime, maybe 2300 people at peak.  I would be surprised if there was more than 100-200 in there nowadays.

Theres a dude here named Realmswalker, pretty sure he said Oh Gods! in a post, and knew of that same name in the MUD.  Made me chuckle to myself.

I played WoW for a few days but I just couldnt get into it.  My anti-scifi wife helped that one die quickly.

Another confession, I've sucessfully tuend Mario kart into a drinking game.  All spins around the use of the additional items and their success/fail.

there was another game i played online...about 10 years ago.... all server side but web connected interface. you picked a race human/orc/elf/warlock etc etc etc, put money into troops, food, buildings what have you.... then after 7 days (real time) all hell breaks loose and you fight each other. can't for the life of me remember what it's called though. no live action or anything you just click the raid button, enter the user who you want to raid and the server does the raid...after a few hours you log in and see how you did. (turn based system you could only do so much per turn) i also recall there was a program you could install on your computer and you'd pull your stats and  type in your opponents name/clan and it would pull their stats and give you an approximation of your chances to win losses during battle etc.

Since we've drifted into the old BBS days...

I was a total Trade Wars junky back in the day.  One of my local BBS's actually ran 4 (Yes, 4!!!) lines into his board and was a beta tester for multi client Trade Wars.  Man, that got messy sometimes.

I played Galactic Trader (which I believe was a Trade Wars clone) on the VAX system.  As well as MONSTER which was a PVP nightmare.

That was my reaction on DLII.  I loved DL in the arcade.  Pumped a lot of quaters into it at Aladdin's Castle.  First time I played it I just tried to control Dirk like any other game and of course instantly died.  Took me a little time and a lot of watching other players but I got it, was able to usually make about 10 screen before I'd lose my first life.  Would time to time make it to the dragon's keep without a continue but never beat it just on 3 lifes. 

When DLII came out I was one of the first in line, was able to get out of the cottage but after that lost interest pretty quickly.  Still haven't finished that one.  I don't think I've even made it through the first time trip. 

Once DL came out on CD I remember playing it on my PII I think, 386 maybe.  Can't recall, at any rate, load times were redonkulous, would take like 45 minutes to get a game going.  Loved having it at home tho.  I never encountered the other Laser Disc greats in the wild but have a real love for them now, especially Super Don Quixote.

At school for animation I really found Don Bluths style to be a great influence.

Heh, I don't remember every having much to do with MUDs but I was one of the really early MOO users.  The MOO was just maturing when I was a freshman in college and much of the development was being done by guys I worked with in the cmpsci dept there.  Spent so many hours as a lab proctor as a MOO beta tester giving feedback on the user facing OO programming.

Damn, dude.  When I hit college, I pondered going back to a lot of those failed systems just for kicks.  Got as far as Atari Jaguar before I threw in the towel on that adventure.


I managed to hit some of that BBS heyday.  Then all of the ones with the good downloads in Dallas vaporized really quickly.  Turned out it was this clown in Austin that scared the crap out of everyone:

I had E.T. for the Atari and I loved it.  I won the game many, many times.  I have heard the landfill story and all the stories on how it might have broken the industry.   But to me it was just a fun game that I owned, my experience of it was very different from the majority I guess.

I never had the Ewok game, but a movie related confession: I did enjoy the Ewok movies as a kid (I haven't really seen them since).

Yeah, a few of the protos have been found.  There was one found in the Boston area a while back and the NECG (New England Collector's Group, I think it was) had 50 repros made up with nice limited labels.  I'm pretty sure I still have one.  That was back when you had to have shells and PCBs custom made.

They were supposed to be Wookies originally.  Then George decided to cut them in half and make them cute because Wookies were too technologically advanced for the story he wanted to tell.  He wanted a "native" culture with basic weapons to help defeat the Empire.  In reality it was his first attempt at marketing to younger kids.

I didn't mind the Ewoks at the time either.  I still have the live action Ewok movie on VMS somewhere.  My wife and I even named our first dog Wicket.  That being said I can understand the criticism now.

I am way late to the game, so here are my top 10 confessions to catch me up:

1)  I wrote a game on the Vic20 in basic that was so big you had to press play on the data-cassette halfway through.  I think it was just over 5k, lol.  It was called "Maze of the Minotaur".

2)  I spent an entire summer playing Ultima 4 on the Apple 2c, and at the culmination I got to the volcano, blew the horn... and nothing happened because of a bug in the game. 

3)  I got hooked on a MUD called Realmsmud in 1991, got kicked out of the computer lab for playing too much (I was a CS minor, sorta needed to be there for school), spent 20 hours a day on the game, slept during class, and ended up dropping my GPA to 2.85, which cut off my funding and forced me to drop out of college. 
  3a)  I met a girl from California on that MUD, she ended up getting divorced because of the game (and because of me and some other guys).  She racked up over $100 per month in long distance talking to me and a couple other players on the phone, and her husband ended up disconnecting her modem.  I walked her through reconnecting it.  Then he took away her internet access (through his office), and I found a local company providing internet at home (rare back then since there was no world wide web yet) which I found through usenet.  I was planning to visit her at the end of the semester.  I never did visit her because dropping out of college sort of forced me to get a job and all that stupid stuff.

4)  The first time I played Diablo 2, I hated it, and Diablo was easily my favorite game ever at that point.  A year later I got hooked on hardcore D2 and played for 2 years straight usually until 2am or later every night (worked at 8 am and had 2-3 kids), had 6 accounts just to mule all my loot, and in all that time I never had a single SoJ drop.  I quit when the SoJ hack came out and it had become cheap currency, and I have not tried the game once since I stopped.

5)  I didn't even know there was a screen after the first in DK..

6)  I have spent money to play free to play games.  A lot of money. 

7)  I have sold game accounts for money.  A LOT of money.

  The only game I have played on a console after SNES was DOA on x-box for a few hours.  At PAX a couple years ago in Seattle I got in early with a handicapped friend and we were the first group through the Borderlands 2 booth and after the demo we got to play the game on the x-box for over a half hour (PAX hadn't opened yet and 50,000 people were waiting in line), but I was like the guy on The Office playing COD, I was stuck running into a wall while I got killed.  It was like trying to play a first person shooter with a touchpad on a laptop.

9)  In 1993, I got a hold of a pin number for a calling card for my dad's business so I could call long distance for "free".  Then I got into pirate BBS's, which were all long distance for me.  I pirated Mortal Kombat for the PC, which took many hours to download at 2400bps.  A few months later I got caught though because that card was no longer in use by employees, and I had racked up $400 in long distance charges pirating games.  Mortal Kombat still holds sentimental value for me because it cost me so much money. 

10) (last one), I had a COD server at work hidden under my desk.  We had a guild mostly made up of employees.  I ended up changing internet providers for my company's VPN network but kept that old connection going as a failover, so it was exclusively used by the server.  I forgot about it after we stopped playing though, and 3 years later I was cleaning out some storage and came across it.  It was still running so I plugged it into my network to log in, but my password had been changed.  Turned out it had been hacked by some German hacker and the drive was packed to the brim with pirated x-box roms and had been a pirate file sharing site for 3 years.

BTW, every time I bring up this hobby, I end up inadvertently selling another arcade to someone.  Now I downplay it and change the subject because I am getting tired of building them for other people, lol.  Oh, and my local arcade was ALSO an Alladdin's Castle.. And the line out the door to play dragon's lair was insane.  I played it once when I went on a slow day, died in about 1.5 seconds, and never tried again.

He had a spare but was hoping to repair the one that was installed.
I had fixed a couple of cold solder joint and went to measure the

Well, looks like we've already seen one borderline "those urban legends were about ME" post, which has me pondering another one.

Has anyone here ACTUALLY used packet radio for anything?  I've independently met 3-4 people, all vaguely from the Dallas area, that claimed they "downloaded new bootleg games from Japan."  Clearly this was some rumor going around in the early 90s in that area, but I've yet to encounter anyone that actually had a set up.  It was always "at some other guy's house."

I do wonder if the story got all munged up with that "Korean Edition" of Street Fighter 2 that was traded around in the area like was a suitcase full of drugs....

I had to request special permission from the Sysop to be allowed to log in for more than one hour at a time so that I could download the two 1MB files at 2400 baud.  Word got around so fast and deep that I had a copy in my neighborhood that the hoarder down the street emerged long enough to ask me to come over and bring the files on disk into his house.  We didn't even know the word hoarder back then, but I can remember the trails through the piles quite well in that house.

Confession: My wife, who was an avid BBS junkie when she was in HS and college, had to explain to me what a BBS is after we were married. I not only missed that ship, I never knew it ever set sail.

To expand on MUD a little: 

Also called Multi User Dimension (for those non-dungeon crawl games).  Back then you didn't have the "world wide web", so the internet was mostly "telnet", along with a few other means of communication and file transfer (like Gopher, FTP, and UseNet).  MUDs were all text based (think Zork), but unlike Zork and other text based games, you could interact with other players, there was a game "heartbeat" that meant that events could happen without you doing anything (yet you could still use basic turn based play), and the world was persistent.  Someone could drop something in one "room" and when you walk in, it would be there.  If you took it, they would no longer have access to it.  This might sound really basic and simple, but at the time it was revolutionary.

At that point in technology, there was no such thing as a large scale multi-player game.  You had a few choices for multi-player games:
 - Turn based games on the same computer.
 - 2 and 4 player consoles (same screen)
 - LAN, serial, or modem based between two computers. (usually limited to 2 players)
 - Games like Trade Wars, which were turn based games hosted on a BBS (bulletin board system, pre-internet site that you dialed into with a modem), where you would log in, take your turn, and then check back the next day to find out the results.

Then of course you had board games and card based games, and RPG's like D&D.  But all those required everyone be in the same room at the same time.  To suddenly be able to play with players from all over the world, in real time, with 50 players, was quite amazing (and quite addictive).

On top of this, you could become a programmer and write your own dungeons or even entire worlds that other players could play in.  Most of the time you had to reach a certain level in the game, then apply to the game masters to get that access, and you had to know the programming language, which was really simple (very close to 'C'). 

MUDs were the predecessor to the modern MMO-RPG.  Games like Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, and World of Warcraft are all "next gen" versions of a MUD. 

FYI, Zork is available to play online by a slew of different sources.  Some are like a MUD where you telnet in to play, some are just online as a PHP app, and some are Java based.  For anyone who was into computer gaming back in the 80's played Zork, it is a great trip down memory lane..

That reminds me...I played a lot of the early MMOs...but never subscribed except to UO.

I did the betas for Ultima Online, Everquest, WOW and more...Played for a month, if I liked it and needed a fix I did the 14 day trial. All for free.
I didn't want it to become too much of a habit. LOL

I did re-up my UO account for the 10th anniversary edition...What was fun is still really fun...what sucked still sucks.

MOO is an object oriented MUD.  It has a fully featured OO language for users to create their own environment.  It's both a social game and a learning tool.  It was rarely used as an actual game with objectives the way MUDs were although it had incredible potential for that.  People would create entire new worlds with fairly decent AI via turing BOTs.  I knew people that had spent years building in a given MOO.  Then invariably they would all go sit in one room together and break off into cliques just like anywhere else.
