Is this possible??
« on: June 25, 2014, 03:50:11 pm »
Hi!

Im looking into building my first cab. I love all the various designs and what not. And of course Ive changed my mind numerous times.

Here is my question. A guy on craigslist is posting an ad to sell a working Atari Road Blasters Cockpit arcade (http://orlando.craigslist.org/clt/4538114538.html) However, I dont want that game and Id prefer to turn it into a star wars cockpit and MAME it to play the various vector games that other people have done.

I know its hard to find the yoke in good working condition. This cab has a version of it and a monitor. I can work on the rest.

Would it be possible? And if so, worth it?

Anything is possible given enough time, talent, and money.  (or enough money to pay for someone else's time and talent).

The monitor in that cabinet is not a vector monitor.  You could play the vector games in MAME, but they won't look like they did on the original cabinet.

Although the yoke in that cabinet looks similar, it doesn't have much in common with a star wars yoke.
You might be able to use the grips and the steering mech, but giving it the y-axis would probably be more trouble than it's worth.

Depends on the price, but IMO pass on it and find something closer to what you're looking for.
With that cabinet, you're basically just getting the cabinet.
I wouldn't pay any more for it than you would pay for one without any controls or monitor since you'd swap those out anyway.

I've also wondered how a Hyperdrive yoke would translate to Star Wars.
Almost bought one a couple times, but have too many unfinished projects already.

The Road Blasters yoke is optical, not analog, so it is not something that you could really convert. The star wars yokes go for $300-$500 these days. If you wanted to use a vector monitor, that would be another $300-$500. I like road blasters, but it is one of the least valuable games out there. The cockpit version is even lower due to the size (I don't think it breaks apart to move it). I have seen a couple of those sit when offered working for $50-$100.

Don't convert a Roadblasters cab...

1. there are so many things wrong with that cab that by the time it's playable for modern games there'd be practically nothing left of the original cabinet or hardware...
2. it's huge and unweildly, meaning it's incredibly difficult to move and incredibly difficult to find a place to put it
3. it's incredibly uncomfortable, older cockpit games just have a plank of wood with some carpet on it as opposed to a legit seat...
4. despite it's lack of popularity and typically you'll be ruining a rare classic game, at least let it go to a home where someone will appreciate the game in it's original form.

--------------

Find a 90s era Sega or Midway driving cab... they take up less space, they're easier to move, they will require far less work to get them where you want them to be, they have newer, larger, better looking monitors and they're generic and plentiful where you wont be destroying a rare machine... and the seats are a lot more comfy too.
