Flappy Bird - Arcade Edition - (cab friendly game)
« on: March 01, 2014, 10:48:51 pm »
Hi all,

Today I spend some time setting up a cab friendly version of Flappy Bird (clone) and though I'd share it here. I actually didn't programmed the game myself, I used an open source project by zbox -> http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=609927 , so all credit goes to him, I just took it and turned it into a cab friendly version.

But anyway, I'm happy to share my version, cause it's pretty fun do play it on a cab. Here's the link:

Download: http://bit.ly/1iAxYaG

I might make a few improvements soon (like a leaderboard!)

PS: the zip files include a settings.ini that you can edit to make it "free play" or decide how many lives per credit.

Windows 8.1 threw up a million security warnings, so if you've hacked my computer please enjoy watching me masturbate.

Can you do anything about the aspect ratio..?

Yeah, I got a warning when I initially downloaded it but the virus check was clean.  I have a feeling the name of the file is common in viruses these days and that's what put the flags up.

Anyway, works great.  I do agree that the aspect ratio is a bit odd but far from a game breaker.

I'll have a look at this warnings, not sure what triggers them... but I can guarantee it's a totally clean and safe little game, no viruses. I'll try to change the name of the .exe to see if that fixes the problem.

Yeah the aspect ration is really the one thing that annoys me... my plan is to create to a 4:3 version, but it requires some heavy code customization (the idea would be to basically replace the black sides with some kind of a Flappy Bird Bezel).

Stay tuned.

Is there a way to adjust the refresh rate?  I get pretty bad sync issues no matter what I do.

Thank you for this... I was considering trying to get an android emulator setup and running to play this on an arcade.

I'm running Win 7 64bit and it seems to run fine, no virus warnings...

it feels quite a bit harder than the phone version... I can regularly get 20+ on the phone game and my best is 68 on your arcade version I'm lucky if I can break 3 and my best is 10  :lol it feels slightly faster, overall especially the flapping movement... I usually average 2 flaps between tubes on the real game and I'm averaging 3 flaps in your version.

Freeplay doesn't seem to work for me... I changed the .ini file but it seems to ignore my changes and stays at 5 plays per credit even though I set it to 0 for freeplay.

Any chance you could offer an option to configure the keys? particularly the exit key... I like to use 1+2 (P1 start+ P2 start)to quit out of games since I don't have a dedicated quit key on my cab.

Thank you for creating this. The kids love it! A leaderboard would be a great addition. I think it is even better to have a logo (with your credits?) at startup and the help screen with the tap instructions only after a credit is entered instead of immediately start the game.

I added it to my Hyperspin setup and extended my HyperMap application to be able to launch it from the MAME menu just like I added Fix It Felix Jr and Space Commander, 2 other great additions from this forum...

The warning I got was that the files is not normally downloaded.

I played the game on my laptop.  There was a bit of tearing.  I'll try it on another computer.  5 was the only button I could get to flap.  It was also adding credits.

Thanks for sharing.

I see that OP did not write the game.  My bad. Thanks for sharing.

this confused me the first time I tried it since it does say push button to flap... but "5" will coin up the game and flap... but once you have credits just about any button can be used to flap.

---------

I also figured out my free play problem. After changing the .ini you have to run the game and then push 0 to reset the score, after that the credits go away and you can play it without the need for credits.

Ya...  I coin up with my coin button and flap with any other button.  It is strange there is a coin button, but whatever.

Is there a way to change the resolution? When I changed the monitor orientation from landscape to portrait, the screen was black.  I could hear the bird flap and crash.

I couldn't figure out how to get this to work on my xp machine as my onboard graphics card doesn't support direct 3d.  Instead I just wrote my own version.  I felt a bit ashamed going to this length just to get it on my arcade machine, I wasn't even that fussed about the mobile version.  It just seemed like a good place to start firstly making my own game, and secondly the reason the game did so well in the first place is due to it's simplicity and addictiveness and 1 common goal.... to get a high score.  These fundamentals I feel are what arcade gaming is all about, so I think it has a perfect place on an arcade machine.

My version is playable in full screen and doesn't have black lines down the side.  At the moment it doesn't have an info screen telling you how to play it, an the writing is all over the place.  It's a work in progress but if anyone would like a copy I'd be happy to hand it over.

Hi all,

I just made a tiny update to the game (same download link). Hopefully this will fix the problem for those who couldn't get the game to run on their machine, especially the game older machines. (I basically compiled the game with an option to force software vertex processing).

I also removed the "J" key as an exit function.

And lastly, remember if you make changes to the settings.ini file, you need to press "0" while in the game so it takes the changes into account.

Great for the "J" key fix. Thanks.

If I ever update my cab to Windows XXX version, I will add this game fer sure, but for now, I'm still stuck a the DOS level :).

Yeah almost full screen, I'd made the game in an odd resolution so it came out with black borders.  I'm not sure what the 312 is, that's probably your high score lol.  Can you send me a screenshot, I've not seen it.

Ah I see!  That was originally on the android version of flappy bird, used to compare your scores against your google friends.  In my version it doesn't actually do anything, but at a later date I'm going to add a score board so you can put your initials in.

Both the PLAY and the 312 really have nothing to do starting the game. You can just click anywhere.

It's more playable than the other version I've tried (it plays like it's on EASY mode, I like that).

Get rid of those 2 start graphics and have one in the middle (like the version above). Or make it cab friendly like above (any buttons to start and play game).

Want to see the final version of it.

Thanks (still looking for a DOS version, I wanna add to my dos cab :) ).....

Re: Flappy Bird - Arcade Edition - (cab friendly game)

Both the PLAY and the 312 really have nothing to do starting the game. You can just click anywhere.

It's more playable than the other version I've tried (it plays like it's on EASY mode, I like that).

Get rid of those 2 start graphics and have one in the middle (like the version above). Or make it cab friendly like above (any buttons to start and play game).

Want to see the final version of it.

Thanks (still looking for a DOS version, I wanna add to my dos cab :) ).....

Ha ha.  I've been a bit selfish with the controls, on my machine insert coin starts the game, insert coin flaps the bird.  My insert coin happens to be on the side of my machine so for me it makes sense.  For some reason I was having trouble assigning it to button 1, I may figure this out moving forward.

I want it to be as much like the handheld version as possible, as I see nothing wrong with the original flappy bird.  There is no reason for the play and scoreboard buttons to be there, other than for aesthetics really.  I do want them to serve a purpose later though, maybe button 1 to play and button 2 for the leaderboard.

One thing that annoys me which you haven't mentioned though, is that it still shows the mouse pointer when the game loads.  On my machine I still haven't brought myself to disable the mouse as I still update the games from time to time.  I can disable that though and I just forgot to do it, I want to make it joystick only (cab friendly, like you say).

Updated version now available to download.  Additions include coins, can insert up to 5 coins.  push 5 to insert coin.  Added buttons player 1 buttons 1 to 6, these include 7,H,9,0,Z and X on a keyboard.  You can also use mouse on a standard pc.

In what way doesn't it feel like or look like the original?

And no offense taken, I don't really care if anyone likes it or not.  I only made it for my own machine.  For me, it's the only pc version that works so I guess I'm the only one who appreciates it.
