I'm with Malenko on this.

Now.

Do you have a moment to talk about joystick orientation?

Yeah, anywhere you put buttons and joysticks is going to cut out torso, limbs, and worst of all, faces.

Way too crowdy and the 4 sticks and 20-something buttons will cover most of the details. Try making an mock up image to see how it will look.

Despite it being crowded it looks better than no CPO at all. The only problem I see besides that is the white areas between body parts.

Other than the over crowding, the clashing art styles is what kills it for me. Obvious XvsSF clip art bunch in the middle, the Alpha 2 clip art group immediately contrasted by the SF3 art and the sprinkling of MvC2 art all around to completely kill any flow. I mean the idea isnt terrible, but why not hire an artist to do all the characters in the same style of art? TO ME, the standard Capcom faux diamond plate CPO would look better.

It reminds me of one of those family reunion photos were no one is looking at the photographer.  Cyclops looks like he is in there twice.  So does Captain America.

This is blue marble contact paper #2.  You aren't going find too many positive comments.  This overlay style falls apart for the same reason MUGEN does.  They just don't match up.

If your are set on doing this sort of thing, open your image in gimp. Save as PDF. Print PDF as a poster and than put your joy and button overlay on top of your print out.  Or do it on the PC.  Either way, get your buttons and joysticks on there so you can see what will be cut out.  Maybe you can move some characters around for better visibility.

end :soapbox:

Good luck.  If you could find away to incorporate Spawn, Mortal Kombat and the Skullgirls, that would be great.

A little too crowded is an understatement.  Once you get your joysticks and buttons on you will lose everything.  But if you want to stay with everyone on the background I would suggest that you orient everyone with their respective colors. ie Put Colossus in between the yellow and red, Mega Man in the Blue, Venom in the Violet area, Spider Man in the red and so on and so on.  At least then it wont be as muddy.

This is why I was asking what you wanted :)   No one is trying to be mean or anything, so don't take it to heart. The concept is fine, the execution could just use a little work.  I only suggested hiring an artist because people dont really get how great it is to have something custom made and unique.  I hired Opt2Not to do my art (well commission him to do art for a cab I was making for a friend) and it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO worth it.

I'm glad you are taking this in stride.  I have a few ideas.
First, if you are interested in custom work, I'm sure there are many people on here, deviant art or reddit that would be capable of this group photo.
Second, for Marvel at least, I wonder if you could at least find all the characters by the same artist.  Posters, or comic characters.

Best of luck.

I'm not really a comic book fan so I didn't really notice that. Now that I've taken a closer look I see what you mean. I also had to laugh when I noticed the chick on the far left in red is not covered up by any other Art so that her crotch would not be covered up by anything.

For those of you long-timers (I've only been here 3 1/2 years), when did these "player collage control panels" become popular? I don't think I've ever seen one on a real machine.

For those of you long-timers (I've only been here 3 1/2 years), when did these "player collage control panels" become popular? I don't think I've ever seen one on a real machine.

I think it's just a trend in general when you have someone that doesn't do a ton of design commissioning a very specific layout.  I create outdoor advertising for a living and I see it happen a lot.  Clients are spending their hard earned money and want to get the most bang for their buck and think "hey, you know what would be better than just having my name?  Having my address too.  And phone number.  And website.  And Facebook/Twitter/Instagram logos.  And a random tagline.  And a second random tagline.  And a QR code.  And a list of services.  And pictures of some stuff we sell.  And a picture of my niece.  And a cute puppy.  And and and...".  Before you know it you've got a design with no dominant element that is difficult to absorb at a glance.  Sometimes it's hard to pare down the elements of a design, and rather than make those difficult design choices a lot of people go with the shotgun approach and just blast everything on there.

My random occupational rant aside, at the end of the day really all that matters is that OP is happy with the artwork.  Everyone has different thoughts as to what looks good and what doesn't, but as long as he is stoked when he plays games on his CP then more power to him.

OP- If you're set on having this many characters, one thing that might help this design have more impact would be to use some perspective and have the characters get smaller as they get further back into the design.  I think part of what throws me off a bit is that the scale of many characters seems a little arbitrary with characters in the back being as big or even larger than ones in the front.  Also, the color saturation is a bit uneven among the characters (for example Megaman looks a bit washed out compared to characters like Cyclops or Storm).  If you're already done with this design please don't think that I'm trashing it, just trying to offer a couple of suggestions to make it stronger in case it hasn't gone into production yet.

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Excellent post. I think your example is a good one. I've always said I liked the approach EMDB took with his:

Still have the characters, but a) they're not obscured by any controls; b) there's not waaaaay too many of them; c) there is a unifying theme.

I actually ditched the girl in the top left, looks weird, replaced with something else. its already being made, so its too late to do any additional changes

I had it done this way because.. well.. i love marvel vs capcom 2! so its just basically wanted all of the characters.  My build isn't supposed to be like a recreation of anything, its actually more so just a different controller design (rather than using a keyboard or xbox controller). Its ONLY a control panel not a full machine (to keep it portable, bringing to peoples houses, etc.) So i decided to let it be flashy :)

but thank you for your input, i promise, nothing was taken as an insult lol

you guys are all great,
thanks

If by GoG you mean game on grafix, I must say I'm a bit surprised.  Art design for a client implies that two way communication is occurring.  This is unprecedented.  Maybe its just the printing and shipping where they go stealth on you.

You know, I have to speak up. Why is it on discussion boards people have try try and make others look stupid. The guy with the collage from Game on Grafix CP, it's not my favorite that I have seen, but it still looks good. It's a collage it's supposed to look busy.Wouldn't it be easier instead of trying to make the guy look like a fool.Have a little courtesy and say yeah man it looks great, or don't say anything at all. He was obviously excited about it. I swear michelangelo could paint the sistine chapel on an arcade post a picture here, and everybody would say "It sucks", "Too busy"" "You should have used somebody here to design your Sistene chapel arcade"," The layouts all wrong," "Where are you gonna put your joystick ,right next to Eve's crotch".Seriously, art is subjective what you like or what he likes could be totally different, just think about others feelings.

Because I know I'd rather have someone be a man and tell me what they honestly thought about something rather than hand me a meaningless gold star and say "Good job, buddy!". We're here to give constructive feedback, not pat someone on the head and give them a cookie. How is someone expected to improve if all they are told is "Yeah man, it looks great" if it really doesn't?

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that he took all the comments like a man and even thanked everyone for it. Not sure why you felt compelled to soapbox.

Its ONLY a control panel not a full machine (to keep it portable, bringing to peoples houses, etc.) So i decided to let it be flashy :)

but thank you for your input, i promise, nothing was taken as an insult lol

you guys are all great,
thanks

I think I have the right to change my post. But for the record I changed my post before I read anyones reply. I wasn't directing my post at you or any one specific. You said "why do I feel the need to soapbox", well I guess it is the same reason you feel the need to give your opinion. My opinion is from what read, most of the people here like to flame the newbie.Thats all i'm saying.

If by GoG you mean game on grafix, I must say I'm a bit surprised.  Art design for a client implies that two way communication is occurring.  This is unprecedented.  Maybe its just the printing and shipping where they go stealth on you.

there was plenty of back and forth.  he didnt just say here it is, like it or not! lol

i told him what i wanted generally, he did that, then we fine tuned.  took about a week to actually get it where I wanted it.
