Slight glitching in Windows 7
« on: February 20, 2014, 01:48:07 pm »
Can someone point out what I can look for to remedy some glitching that goes on during MAME game play?  It's very annoying.  I wasn't experiencing this problem in the past.  I thought maybe it something I installed was causing the problem so I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 7.  I finished all the Windows updates and installed Security Essentials and that's it.  Running MAME without a frontend still gives me the problem.  I'm now wondering if it's due to a Windows 7 update?  Maybe Security Essentials?  I tried both Mame64 and Mame32 and its the same problem.  Very annoying when your trying to play a game like frogger that requires quick reflexes and it glitches for a slight second to screw you up.

Any suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks,
-Chris.

"glitch" is pretty vague.

Frogger had discrete sound and therefore requires more horsepower than other old games.
Are you using HLSL?
Try it with HLSL off.
If that fixes it, then turn HLSL back on and try reducing the prescale.

What kind of hardware are you running on?

What version of MAME are you running? You might try a slightly older version and see if that helps too (like 0149).

If you want you can also investigate turning off less used/unneeded services and such. Here is a link that might help:
http://windows7themes.net/windows-7-services-safe-to-disable.html

I don't think this would cause that issue, but you could double check you have your Power Options set to performance or what it is called.

I think I finally figured out my problem.   It was the video card driver.  For some reason the driver from the official Nvidia website was the issue.  That was the only thing I installed after my clean install of windows 7. I reverted back to the stock Windows 7 driver for my video card and that has seemed to correct my problem.  We'll see.  Thanks for the help guys.  Now back to some smooth gaming hopefully!
