120hz speed issues/scan line and border issues at 31hz
« on: January 30, 2014, 04:27:15 am »
I've been experimenting with the latest version of GroovyMame using a 19 inch Panasonic CRT monitor and a Radeon HD 4650 card specifically bought for compatibility with the crt ati drivers with varying results and i have some questions. The PC itself is an i5 running at 3.0ghz with 6gb of ram.

My aim is to try and get the best emulation possible and reducing scrolling tearing as much as it can. I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with the following:

1. The monitior itself does not support 15hz, however the works with 120hz drivers (pc_31_120 and pc_70_120). I've switched on black frame insertion as well.

The few horizontal games i've tried seem to work well and look fantastic, the scan lines look great, however i have noticed that they don't fill the area of the monitor completely (i.e. there are black borders). Is it simply a case that i have to adjust my monitor accordingly or have I not got scaling switched on correctly? The monitor itself sits in a cocktail cab and it’s a real pain to mess with its front panel controls.

The biggest problem however is vertically scrolling games, they just run super quick (i.e double or more speed?). Is there any way to fix this or is this a side effect of doubling the frame rate?

If it is fixable, i want a solution that doesn't introduce any more input lag than the current mame build.

Again I’ve also noticed that the picture does not fill the entire screen.

Could this be due to the way monitors need adjusting? If i adjust the picture for each resolution will the monitor remember the settings for each one? I've been using pc's for a long time and remember having to tinker with monitor settings to make things full screen in the past.

120hz is the ideal for me but I just need to get the speeds right,

2. If i try the standard monitor driver (monitor_31 i think?). The picture looks clean and speeds are correct, again the image is not filling the entire screen (I can see borders).

Plus the image looks blocky? sounds strange but it could just be that its the way its supposed to look and that what i am seeing is an unscaled image looking perfect. I've tried switching scan lines on but it makes the picture look dark (especially as the 120hz one with hardware scan lines looks amazing). I've tried tinkering with the alpha settings but nothing has made a difference.

The standard mame fills the screen fine, but I’m guessing this is because its running at a fixed resolution for all games and just scaling to full screen accordingly.

I'd be happy with standard mame if it wasn't for the screen tearing.

Any advice would be appreciated :(

Borders top and bottom requires monitor adjustment. Left and right can be fixed with GM.

What switch is used to adjust the left/right border? That would be cracking if I could change that.

Anyhow after a few hours of messing I worked this out. When running at 120hz, with orientation horizontal, rotating the screen to a 3:4 rotation using the mame video rotate option causes vertical games to speed up like crazy.

Instead putting in an orientation of vertical and leving rotation set to none fixes the issue and the game runs at 100%. I've just put in separate ini files for vertical games to change the orientation.

Hi MysteryM,

When using the 'vesa' presets, the timings are calcutated according the the VESA standard. If you want to use custom timings, you can use these precalculated values as a base. Create a log (groovymame -v romname >romname.txt) and the timings used will be by the beginning of the file. Paste them here and I'll tell you how to edit them to alter the margins.

That said, you won't get consistent results across resolutions on a PC monitor. You'll need to use the monitor controls to adjust each mode. The good news are that the monitor will probably remember the settings for different resolutions, so it should be a job to be done just once for each resolution.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.
