best way to peel/scrape old vinyl art off of cab?
« on: April 22, 2013, 11:09:20 am »
I picked up a Lethal Enforcers cab this weekend for $40. had a monitor with no chassis, power supply doesn't work, no game board or anything, but it does have what I assume is a functioning coin mech and door, speakers, marquee light and its jamma wired for what used to be in it.
anyway, for 40 I'm happy with it. my plan is to create new art for the whole thing, but it has vinyl decals on the sides of the original art which isn't in great shape and I dont' want it anyway. so, I want to get it off.

is it just scrape until its gone, or is there some kind of goo that will help without messing up the wood underneath? Figured better to ask first that just start going crazy on it.

thanks.

Some people use heat guns to help the process of peeling the vinyl. There's also a product called Goo Off.

ah, thats good. I already own a heat gun but didn't think of that. I use it for warming up oil based clay.

I'll check out goo off too. thanks for the tips.

Just went through this (I think there's a thread under Woodworking on it).  I used a hairdryer and scraper -- heat gun would probably work even better.  Then, for the goo, I tried Goof Off but it was useless.  Goo Gone was much more effective.  Tilt the cabinet onto its side, spray the Goo Gone, let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then scrape off.  Clean off the remaining mess and let it all dry.  If this doesn't get it all off, repeat again.  I had to go through the process twice to get all the gunk off.

yea I didn't think it would be easy, but if I want to put something new on there, I don't think sticking it to old stuff is gonna work too well.

the cab isn't in terrible shape overall but its going to need some TLC before I'm ready to put new parts in it.

Where are you located? The funny thing is I just picked up a Point Blank cab 3 days ago that had the original description tag that said it was a Konami Lethal Enforcers cab. Mine had a monitor, marquee light, power supply, light guns and coin door/mechs but no pcb board. Mine looks like it has the artwork but has been painted black on top. The artwork is coming off with no problem but is leaving the adhesive on the wood. I'll definitely use goo gone but I also heard to use a wire brush attached to a drill will do the trick too.
