LCD Bartop: Linux OK?
« on: April 05, 2013, 05:59:16 am »
Dear Arcade Forum,

I'm quite new here and, as probable everyone here, am going to build a mame Bartop. Hardware I chose a Asrock E350M1, Monitor an NEC 19" S-PVA Panel (should be kinda multisync). 80s Games are sufficient (Xevious, MSPacman), maybe some 90s.

I'm quite experienced in Debian Linux, which runs on quite every machine I have (apart from the Sat Receiver, theres some openpli thing running).

What is the best OS for souch an ITX Mainboard and LCD Panel? I would prefer linux. But is some other combination better, i.e. TinyXP, Powerstrip etc..? Is maybe the syncrefresh/audio stutter thing covered better with TinxXP? Or is groovymame the way to go?

Cheers,
Clemens

I've had mixed results using linux along with mame on some small form factor boards. Some boards i have ran linux and mame great, better than a stripped down windows even. Others ran piss poor.

Personally, I would just test a number of common distros such as groovyarcade etc and see if they run well enough for your taste. Probably not the answer you were looking for but just from my personal experience, you are better off just testing various distros before making a solid decision.

If you're most comfortable with Linux, then you probably have the skill to make Linux do exactly what you want more easily than any other OS.  You'll need console framebuffer support unless you really like X, and that will probably require a custom kernel.  The rest is all OS customization such as trimming unwanted services and setting up autologin and startup application(s) for tty1.

The mainboard should be fast enough, i am stil using a socket 754 AMD in my cab, almost 10 years old.
I run Lubuntu, wich is easy to install, very lightweight and has a lot of emulators available
