Best graphics card for GroovyMAME?
« on: March 20, 2013, 05:00:01 am »
I'm looking for a replacement for my Nvidia GeForce graphics card.

Is any ATI card really equally well suited for GroovyMAME with an arcade monitor? Is there a list of supported/recommended cards? I would much prefer a card outputting 5 volts on pin 9 as I use a video amplifier.

The PC I intend to use has AGP and PCI slots.

Any suggestions?

Tobias

I think the ATI X300 or x600 cards are said to be the most compatible and best cards to look for if just using MAME, as MAME doesn't actually use the GPU that much for emulation. But if your looking at using other emualtors that will use the GPU then a ATI HD 4 series card, 5 series are uncompatable

Good thing with the x300/600 cards is 99.9% of them are passive cooling, so no fan

Now what im not sure of is if having a card with just a DVI socket is a disadvantage to getting one that has a VGA socket?

I had some "fun" with having both  a VGA and DVI output on the ATI Radeon X1600 Pro. Basically, I had my LCD monitor plugged into the DVI slot, and Arcade Monitor connected to the VGA port, via an Ultimarc JPAC. The odd thing was, once I got the arcade monitor all dialed in with soft15k and life being good, as soon as I unplugged the LCD, the arcade monitor would crap out. Connected the DVI port to the arcade monitor using a gender bender and DVI to VGA cable. Chose that route vs. uninstalling drivers, reinstalling, etc..

Groovymame is awesome on that, but if I choose a really low res game, exit that game, which goes to the selection menu, the resolution seems to stay low, so making out the letters is tough. I am hoping that using a front end will eliminate that.

I'm now using an ATI Radeon FSC with issues as described here:

Hi tobiasbp,

I think you might be the first user testing that card, let us know about your progress.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.
