One interesting thing is that no matter what Catalyst version/ati model (tried with X300/X600SE/4350) I use, I always got 2 display adapters in the Device manager. Usually the other is the "correct" Radeon, but the other is Standard vga adapter. Also sometimes the Standard vga graphics tells me "Devce cannot start error 10".
This is definitely strange and you should focus on that. Most older ATI cards are recognized as two separate devices, and during the driver installation process they're recognized as independent devices and you can see how driver files are copied twice.
You can't expect to get this working unless after installing drivers your Device Manager dialog doesn't show every video related device properly identified and working, and in 'dxdiag' you have both DirectDraw and D3D hardware acceleration enabled.
Sometimes you even need to manually uninstall the built-in drivers by right clicking on the device, etc. and restarting in safe mode in order to install drivers to avoid Windows restoring them on startup. I believe I have described the process several times in other threads.
To summarize, I'm 99% sure that if I had that machine here I would manage to get the drivers working, but it's definitely true that the process can get very tricky in some cases. Sorry for this.
Thanks Calamity once again. Yes, I noticed the files are copied twice, so at least the installer is trying to do it right
Here's the procedure I've tried:
1. Control Panel - Add remove programs - remove Ati catalyst
2. Restart and go into Safe mode - run the Catalyst remove program
3. Restart into safe mode and run the installer/Restart into Windows and run the installer
4. Drivers are intalled twice
5. Windows only offers 8bit colout and I cannot even accept the ok for the already used resolution -> always BSOD.
Been tinkering with windows from 3.1 and this has been by far the trickiest driver related issue ever. Still I'm extremely grateful to you Calamity fo your support and running this project
I'll get my perfectly working cab someday - somehow
Haven't actually removed the drivers from the Device manager, I'll give that option a go later today.
