Original xbox - low resolution output possible?
« on: April 22, 2012, 04:47:20 pm »
I'm messing around with a modded original xbox with MAME and was thinking about putting it in an arcade cab. I'd like the emulation to be as accurate as possible but found out that the xbox is not capable of putting out resolutions lower than normal TV res? I have arcade monitors in my cabs.

I saw that it's possible to run linux on an original xbox. Is there any MAME build that I could run that would allow me to specify a (lower than TV) resolution for each game? Something like GroovyArcade for xbox?

Bummer! Thanks for the reply.

I guess I'll go back to PC/ GroovyMAME/ soft15.

The hardware video encoder in the Xbox console, at least the early Conexant model, does support true 240p progressive 15 kHz output. Unfortunately the Microsoft development kit (XDK) does not support anything else than interlaced 15 kHz video modes (meaning 480i / 576i). And because all emulators were made by using that XDK kit, nothing displays correctly. This is the reason why I abandoned the whole idea of using Xbox for old school gaming and switched over to Advance MAME in about 2002-3...

I think it is possible to output 240p 15 kHz out of Xbox, by some sort of tweaking that TV encoder registers or something like that... but since nobody cares, for all over those years..., it is very unlikely to happen.

It is a shame, because the closed platform is always much better than having to rely on a mess like  generic PC.

Very sorry for the old bump did not want to start a new topic on this.

I have started a very active thread on this over on another forum in xbox 1 dev stuff. Mods please let me know if i can post the link so i can get more input over there.

The interest in this is very high be assured and if there is a way we will find it. 240p on xbox 1 is the final frontier for xbox old school gaming.

How would one go about tweaking the registers? That's my question here. I have also emailed sailorsat on here about maybe making an xbe patcher for soft 15khz as well.
