I assume this the "Carnival" you're talking about:
http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7286It really all depends on what version of MAME you are using.
For quite a while Carnival (in MAME) did not have sound. Incomplete emulation. Sound not completed in the emulation.
I remember playing it in earlier versions of MAME and it was not as fun because the sound was missing.
I'm not sure when it finally happened, but the MAME devs finally got around to improving the emulation code and it now has sound.
First with sound samples, then with the actual digital sound from the rom file.
I'm using MAME version .145. Carnival has sound. Works great.
So...I'd first check to see which version of MAME you're using. Check this against MAME dev notes on the game. Update MAME if needed. If you're still not getting sound at that point, I'd then suggest you check to see that you have the most recent rom dump of the game. There might be a more recent rom file for the game that works (sound) with your version of MAME. Finally check for sound sample files missing if your version of MAME requires them.
MAWs was great for this kind of info search. Unfortunately that site is down
Looks like partial sound was made available through sound sample files (separate sound files) around MAME version .27

http://mamedev.org/source/src/mame/audio/carnival.c.htmlIF sound samples are still required, you can find them in various places. Here's one:
http://samples.mameworld.info/I'm not in front of my cabinet while I write this so I'm can't check to see if sound samples are needed anymore or not.
I can check if you still need help. Good luck.
