Laser Disc MPEGS
« on: April 05, 2002, 06:21:22 pm »
I've read on some boards about how you can use Daphne to play old Laserdisc games like dragons lair and stuff.  My friend bought a dragon's lair original laser disc at a flea market thing, but it's sorta scratched a bit.  We are not sure if it works because neither of us have a laserdisc player. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one before.  We don't want to spend a load of money on purchasing some old laserdisc player for this.  But I've read that people have figured out how to rip MPEGS from the laserdiscs and play them on their PC using Daphne.  Has anyone done this before?  And also, I read that you need some sort of very small rom images that I guess are dumped from the original boards.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yeah people have already ripped their laserdisc games onto their computers and played them with daphne. You do need rom images and you can get them from the dragons lair project. But an alternative to that is if you have a dvd-rom on your computer you can buy the dvd-roms of dragons lair and space ace (only those work with dvd2daphne) from http://www.digitalleisure.com and use dvd2daphne here: http://www.geocities.com/veralanpher/ and it will rip them into mpeg format which daphne can use.

You can get a laserdisc player that will work with daphne off of ebay pretty cheap.  I got mine for $15 AFTER shipping and handling and it works fine.  The Daphne website's faq gives you a link for a list of LD players that work for playing the LD through Daphne.

You might have better off buying the DVD-ROM versions of Dragons Lair and Space Ace, and use the DVD2Daph utlity.   They video is already in MPEG2 format, and it converts the audio to OGG, and creates a frame file for you.

Check out the newsgroups alt.binaries.emulators.misc and alt.binaries.emulators.arcade.

Daphne MPEGs get posted there on a regular basis.
