Stuck on Wiring Plan
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:48:51 pm »
CP cut is done!!!  Having a blast as i forgot how much i missed working with wood.  Now acrylic is kicking my arse, but i might send that off to get milled at a company.

I need to order all the parts now and was hoping someone would be kind enough to take a look:

Crimp Connectors-Type: 4.8 mm
Daisy-Chain Harness- Cable Type: 6.3mm (1/4in) Connectors
I-PAC 4 Interface - Cable Type: USB Cable
UltraStik 360 Ball Top Joystick with USB cable- Qty 4
Ultralux Translucent Illuminated Pushbuttons. Includes LED. -5 colors red, blue, green, yellow, white
White Pushbuttons with black Logo - 1-4 players

34 buttons total

So i do need PacLED64 Advanced LED Controller, correct?  I need both the Ipac and this?  If not how many controllers will i need?  32 buttons, 4 joysticks and 1 trackball

I need to make a decision on trackball- 3"-  This CP is getting sick as i also have client who wants to airbrush the Death Star onto the ball.  What do you guys think i should get for a trackball?

I want to secure as much as possible under the cp as i want it clean.  Please let me know if i am missing something.

I have included pic of my cp, please be gentle!!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Hula73

Spent alot of time fixing up the artwork, but i dont want to order all my parts until i get my question answered on the LED vs. Pac4 control board.
I was worried thought the artwork was going to look toooooo busy.

How do you want your LEDs to work? If you want them all to be on all the time, you don't need an LED controller, just wire them to your power supply and make sure they're wired properly (with the appropriate resistors if needed). If you want them to be controlled, say you only want active buttons lit for each game or animations, you will need an LED controller such as the PACLED64 (as well as software such as LEDBlinky).

About airbrushing something onto a trackball. I can't imagine that's going to work well. A trackball gets the hell beat out of it when you're playing, and it's riding on metal rollers.

If you could find someone that could +cast+ a deathstar design +into+ an acrylic ball, that would probably work (assuming you keep the overall mass about the same).

And if you find someone, please post! I'd love to get a semi transparent globe done that way, but haven't had any luck.

I found one possibility, but the ball was out of round, and wouldn't work at all. It's got to be a perfect sphere.

Where is Porkins?  If he isn't on the artwork, it's not acceptable!

And where does the trackball go?  I didn't it indicated on the CP.

I do agree, the more i think about it that maybe the trackball isn't going to be possible, but MAN it would be awe...some!!!   I do want independent leds so looks like i will have to get led controller.

Have you looked at joystick/button placement compared to the artowrk?  You may want to move Dooku...  It looks like player 1 will be grabbing his "joystick" the entire time!

To top everything else off on this pedestal design i went to http://www.datapro.net and had them mill me a custom faceplate.  160$ but well worth it in a pedestal design for hooking up external devices.

http://www.datapro.net/cgi-bin/plate_designer?load=20121210222023_405b1098 was the one they made for me.  I received it in 3 days.  Really finished off my cabling issue.

They did a fantastic job on it.

Any reason you went with 6 buttons for player three and four?

Even though they are not needed for Mame.  I inserted them for looks and PC games

But really it was overkill.

A cheaper option that might not look quite as elegant would be to use a keystone faceplate with all the different plugs.  A quick search of monoprice shows the faceplate at less than a dollar. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10517&cs_id=1051703&p_id=6838&seq=1&format=2

And each plug looks like it is in the $1-3 range.

If you've got the dinero though yours looks pretty sweet.
