My first project: A Nexus 7 powered DK themed Bartop
« on: May 12, 2013, 12:31:50 pm »
Hi everyone,

Been reading these forums a lot over the last couple of months and found so much helpful advice, so I thought I would share my project (pics below) with you. It's my first ever build of anything and it's not exactly beautifully finished but I'm happy with it and I've learnt a lot to make it better next time.

I haven't seen any cabinets based on Android or making use of a tablet so I thought it might at least be interesting for that.

The Nexus 7 slots in and out of the cabinet via the door on the back. It connects to a Micro USB hub which powers the controls and the lighting. The emulator is the excellent MAME4droid Reloaded for Android. It does not require to be plugged in which is nice as I can easily use it wherever.

Any questions/suggestions just ask.

Jim

Looks like a great first cab! It's good to see you learned from this build, and plan to use that knowledge in the next build. I think it's a good-looking cab, if not a bit rough around the edges. I really think the idea of using a tablet is cool, makes for a neat portable build!

Jim awesome build :applaud: I may be getting a Galaxy S4 at the end of the month and I would love to build something around that.

As far as audio goes are you using just the tablets speakers? how does that sound behind everything?

Thanks guys, it's nice to get some feedback!

TPA5: I hadn't originally planned on making it portable but that is probably its best feature. I took it to work and everyone loved having a go. No plugging in necessary. The tablet powers the light too which is nice.

05SRT4: Yeah, I'm just using the tablet's speakers. It doesn't sound brilliant but it does the job. I actually have a small usb powered speaker that could plug into the tablet and hub so may try that later.
