Arcade Legend (Formally Dragon's Lair) Custom
« on: January 02, 2014, 05:22:05 am »
I am a huge Dragon's Lair fan and I have decided to start a new project.  Now, this is not a full authentic restore and will be a custom DL dedicated cab with custom artwork.  It will take me a few months to finish this thing because the cabinet is in rough shape.  The cab I picked up in El Paso at a jukebox distributor back in 2006.  They were throwing away about 50 cabs and I grabbed as many as I could get in my pickup over several trips.  This one is in the worst shape and decided to start with it.

Standard generic Dynamo cab and it was bare when I got it.

Already ordered the Ipac2, 2 large Happ buttons, stick, vinyl, harnesses and have a 25" Plasma TV to drop in it.  All the new custom artwork is drawn up too.  I'm keeping this one simple so Im dropping an older laptop in it because Daphne is the only thing it will be running.

I have 6 arcade cabs altogether just waiting to be done and I too have limited space so I figure I could go one DL, one Ms. Pacman and one 2 player MAME.  If I can ever get my garage started I'd have more.

I hear you, bro.

Love the Dynamo. I'd drive to El Paso myself just to pick one up!

Heck man, they threw away 2 perfectly good Dynamo Showcases that I nabbed too.  Just do not have the room for one.  :(

Got all the holes and dings filled in with some putty and just doing the sanding now...  I'm a little worried about swelling with the big holes, there is a lot of wood putty in there.

Need some expertise here.  I usually strip them down and apply fresh vinyl but I have been reading up on painting it instead.  Can anyone give me a few pointers here?  Just wondering if 1 coat of primer is enough and about how many coats of paint should I go minimum?

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Well, a crap load of wood putty, sanding and about 4 coats later, it is coming along.  Need a few more coats for good measure and then I'm going to finish the CP and bezel.  Also reworked the marquee art a little.

;)  Wish I could man!  Wait till you see Daphne working.  Back in 2007'ish, I converted the XBOX 360 HD files to Windows format files and spliced them into scenes, frame per frame, using the 1997 Digital Leisure version as reference to get it as close to the original Laser Disk as possible.  I am also using a special modified version of Daphne Loader from 2003 which is the 124 build to play the HD files.  Took me about 6 months to do.  Now a days you can just download it but at the time I was dedicated to doing it myself.  I'm going to drop a Sony theater surround system in there if I have room.  I know its overkill but the audio is in full HD, why not rock it like it supposed to be?

Quick update.  The Dragon's Lair has been canceled for another cabinet.  This cab is going to just be a generic 2 player Multi-cade style instead.  I found my 4 player control panel in storage that goes with this cab and dont want to waste it by leaving it in storage.  Yes I know 2 player on a 4 player CP is wasting a lot of acreage but me, my friends and family are...  large people and need the space, I like a lot of elbow room.  I have enough cabs to still make Dragon's Lair later.

Years ago I collected action figures.  I had considered making a diorama of the DL action figures in the marquee area.  I had to let the cab go because we were moving.  One day...

You'll have your day too.

Getting ready to paint the bottom of the control panel.

Test fit of the CP.

Still need to sand the heck out of it, round those corners and touch it up a little.

Yeah I was thinking that too while I was throwing it together.  I might go another direction in the end.  My issue is that when I think I am going to commit to a certain style, I'll change it at 3 in the morning.
