My Showcase CPO..
« on: February 15, 2012, 01:41:35 pm »
Ok, I'm not a photoshop wiz but I think this turned out ok. I came accross a showcase pedestal and decided to use it for a project. My twins are 4 years old so i designed the control panel with them in mind more than me. I went with individual colored players becaues I figured they would want to be able to choose what color they wanted to be and kids like bright colors. Trying to think like a 4 year old.. My wife would say I do that very well. Anyways, with that in mind I came up with the idea you see below using illuminated buttons to enhance the Control Panel a bit. Colorful and simple for the kids with a bit of design for adults. If anyone needs the blank showcase template in photoshop format you can grab the zip from my site. I couldn't find one so I created this one. If I can save someone the headache of creating one then my job is done. Blank Showcase Template 300dpi PSD Zip 11 megs

Nice job - choice of colour is OK - But choice of character would be awesome. Why not place yellow as wolverine, blue as Captain america (cor chun lee) green as hulk and red Ryu.
Or a host of other chars - only reson i gave those one as there is an awesome resource of them here

Even a novice could manage a quick cut and paste  ;D
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

4 year olds you say?

I would bring that trackball closer to the edge, maybe a few inches.

Also think about dropping the player 1/2 & coin buttons closer to the action buttons knowing how far a 4 year old can reach.  Oh, also think about adding exit and pause.

Ok, well, I asked the kids last night about what characters they would like to see. I pretty much knew the answer would be Thomas The Train as they have been into that for almost a year now. I have 3 soon to be 4 year old twin girls who love Thomas The Train. So much that everyone one in our house from myself, my wife, ants, uncles and grandparents have train names. I don't see the need to lower the start buttons or trackball. My girls are very tall. So tall that at 3 years (will be 4 in April) that they can reach into the freezer part of our refrigerator and pull out ice cream and stuff. It's a standard fridge with the ice box at the top. Everyone thinks they are 5 or 6 it's crazy.. At 2 they could sit on stools and reach everything on my Mame-room cabinet. See here if interested in that build: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=103549.0

Anyways.. I retooled the overlay. It's pretty but I don't know if I can bring myself to put it on a Mame cab even if it is for my kids. It has nothing to do with anything arcade related and they will outgrow the theme eventually. However, I know they would love it as they do enjoy playing my current games and pins and this would feel like it was theirs. I guess I could just replace the overlay again in a couple years. It's not like it would be difficult. hm... what to do indeed... As much as I love my kids and want to make them happy I don't think I can do it. I think I'll stick with the generic theme above.

interest in characters comes and goes really fast with kids.  You might want to rething using thomas on there.  My 5 year old has no interest in thomas anymore.

I hear ya.. I only mocked that up to see how it would look. I figure it would only be good for a year or so then I'd have to replace it. I really don't think I'm going to use it. As of now I'm still going with the generic theme that you see in the first thread post.

Ok, Cab is pretty much done, I got to install the trackball and aimtrack guns still which is on order from Ultimarc, and tidy things up a bit and probably box in the monitor stand feet to match up to the pedestal a little better. I might build a marquee at some point too. Front end is Hyperspin as with all the builds I've done. Has all the Hyperspin bells and whistles, vids, emulators etc.. It turned out good. Unfortunetly from the pics you can't make out any of the control panel detail but to the naked eye it looks good. 42" LCD Monitor (not a TV) but I force 4:3 and correct vertical aspects upon mame. It just bugs me if something looks stretched. What is funny though is with Daphne, and Sega Model 2 / 3 emulation, I stretch to full and it looks great. Hyperspin is full screen and look great too. The pic was taken with my Iphone so the LCD looks a bit washed but it's not at all washed. Too bad, cause it really does look nice.

One thing I would like to do is put some colored dust rings around the joysticks.. Does anyone know where I can get colored dust rings? Thanks..

IL makes colored dustwashers for the Eurostick which is almost the same as the Competition.  Not sure if they are sold separately though.  Clear acrylic washers are available and you could spray the backside of them whatever color you want.
