Mala can't find game list, isn't running mame

I'm trying to setup mame with mala and having a problem with no games in the main game list.  I get the standard mala page but with no games.  It gives me a pop up box which says "no games are in the main game list of this emulater, mala suggests you update the game list".  If I click yes, mala freezes with the "please wait...collecting games" box up.

When I bring up the drop down menu in mala, it says "emulator not running".  I guessing this is part of the issue.

mame seems to run fine on its own.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Seems to be working now.  A drivers updated seemed to help.
