Questions about a MAME project.
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:04:23 pm »
I'm planning on mameing an old Soul Edge cabinet, (if anyone is interested in the board for it I think it still works.)  My question is about removing the CRT.  My plan is to pull it out and then swap it probably for a TV.  I am aware of the dangers of shock when working with CRTs but I had a question about how to remove it from the cabinet.  There is no access to the inside of the cabinet except through the front and I won't be able to discharge it until I have it out.  Am I safe to just grab both sides of the metal chassis and pull it out to my chest and lower it to the ground from there?  I guess I don't see any alternative or safer way to do it so I imagine that this is the only way to get that guy out of there.  I would assume that holding the sides of the chassis is better than holding the top and bottom?

I'm probably over thinking this one but just wanted to be safe before I start tearing into it. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Why are you swapping it out for a TV?

Doesn't work.  Wish it did, would probably try a cap kit to get it up and running again but the buddy who I'm helping do it wants it done for Christmas.

If it has not been plugged in for months it is more than likely discharged just from sitting.  You should be safe to pull it out holding onto the metal chasis.  Just keep hands away from the rear and circuit board(s) just to be safe.  May still be wires attached.

To make yourself feel better and safer, wear some rubber gloves.

PMd you Mac Green

It's funny that you mention the rubber gloves because I had decided that I would throw on my pair of dish gloves as ridiculous as that seems.  Pretty funny visual at least.

It's been on in the last couple of days so there's a chance that it has some charge to it.  I'll just be really careful.  I should be able to get all the wires disconnected from underneath where the CP pulls out.

As said before, as long as you don't touch anything "electric" you will be safe. The big red cable with the rubber cap connected to the tube is one thing to avoid ;) But just holding in the frame won't hurt you.

Alot of people over due the whole discharge thing. The main time you really need to discharge is if you are actually pulling off the 2nd anode (the big suction cup looking thing).
But I guess its always safest to leave it powered down for a bit first. And like Randy Fromm says in his monitor classes, don't go licking anything on the electronics.

Ok, yeah, I pulled it out and it wasn't a big deal.  Came right out, it was actually lighter than I expected.

Here's some pictures of it.  I'm trying to find anyone locally that could use it, in the end I don't think it will take much to get it going again.  Just displays a bit dark but doesn't look that old and the inside of the cabinet was really clean.
