upgrading mame

I want to upgrade my mame version from .138u3  to the newest version but i dont want to have to reconfigure all the buttons for each game and i dont want to lose my high scores on the games i have. is there any way to upgrade and keep these settings?   thanks
Cabs: Tron, MKII, MK4, KI2, Blitz99, TMNT, Pac-Mania, Defender, Mame Box.
PCBs: MK1, UMK3, Killer Instinct, Area51, Sunset Riders, Pit Fighter, Wargods.

I believe the highscores are kept in the NVRAM folder, just copy it....cant remember off the top of my head for the settings thou....

awesome! good to know.. now to figure out how to save the button and game settings and i'll be set! thanks

Did you make a ctrlr file?  You can just copy that over.  If you have not, look it up on the wiki

Just thinking about my post up above......

what does NVram stand for?

NON-VOLITILE   RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY?

meaning that it doesnt get erased when power is cut to it?????( Ie. CMOS BATTERY comes into play then)

is that correct?

the cfg files worked! thanks! Im about to add another 35 games to my arcade and update mame and i didnt want to have to set the buttons for all 200 games again... ive done this manually 3 times already lol. i cant believe i didnt realize you can copy the cfg folder lol. thanks for the help
