Good iPad app for remote access?
« on: January 15, 2012, 05:22:23 pm »
There are a handful of apps with various price tags in the AppStore for remote access.  I need to view/edit files on a win7 pro desktop over wifi.  I don't need it to be "easy", but it would be nice to have the settings saved if it is a hassle.

Video streaming would be nice, but is not necessary.  Mostly excel type work.

Splashtop Remote Desktop is my choice. The free 'streamer' (server) runs on the PC, and the client is available for iphone, ipad, webos, android, playbook, kindle fire, nook, mac and pc.

On the plus side, it does video streaming better than a VNC connection, the clients go on sale frequently, and (once purchased) the client can be used to connect to any streamer.

On the minus side, you have to buy each client (although non-commercial PC client use is free) and last time I checked, games needed to be run in a window.

Note that I haven't tested with a bluetooth keyboard, and that might be critical for excel purposes. Be sure to read some reviews before purchase.

Anything that doesn't require installation on the client end?

If you don't want to install something on the server side, you can look for an app that connects using RDP. I've never used this, but it seemed like a good fit
