Arcades that are still around

I thought I'd start a thread about arcades that are still around after a recent trip to Geneva on the Lake, Ohio.

For anyone that's never been Geneva on the Lake it's a summer strip near Lake Erie in Ashtabula about an hour East of Cleveland. Back in the day the street had at least 8 large arcades peppered in amoung the hamburger stands, ice cream places, and other touristy places. Now it's down to 3. I took some pics on the outside as they paint it and update it. It's rare to see an arcade but it's even rarer to see one that hangs up any kind of sigange for the games inside. Granted the signage for the games are 3 years old at the newest.

Thats very cool, very old school looking. Dont see many arcades that have the full lighting setup like that anymore.

The arcade scene is still very much alive in Singapore although there are exactly zero old school games. Every mall has it's own arcade, often with an internet cafe attached. You often see whole families playing together but than again, nobody looks strangely at you when you play a DS or PSP on the bus either.

Nice, we have a pretty nice arcade here in Santa Cruz, CA at the boardwalk. Some pretty old school games. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to visit very often in my 4 years here due to school.

How well are the games maintained there?  (I'm ready for a road-trip)

  I go to Ocean City, MD a couple times a year and every other game I try to play has something wrong with it.
The last time I tried 3 gun games in a row that were calibrated too poorly to be playable.  One used a positional gun and I had to hold it sideways to get the crosshairs in the center of the screen.  I also tried to play Daytona.  Out of 4 machines, only one had sound, but 3rd gear didn't work on that one. 

The local fair is coming up and a couple vendors set up temporary arcades that aren't too bad.

Here in Omaha we have a couple decent-sized arcades still.

The first is Family Fun Center.

This used to be a dedicated arcade, but over the years they've added lazer tag, paint ball, and an old-school arcade themed glow golf.





Family Fun Center is really designed around kids birthday parties as part of their business plan.  Every now and then they do a purge of arcade cabinets, leaving them out free for any takers (not sure if they're replacing them).

Our other arcade option is a Dave & Busters.



Yep, it's a chain, but they do take care of their machines, and they do tend to have the latest arcade games.

The only thing we have left, is the Boardwalk in El Cajon. They started parting out their cabinets, but thats where I had most of my memories of arcades from when I was a kid. Its still there, but they are geared more towards little kids now, they have a ball pit, and some hamster tube things, and mini golf and some bumper car things. I havent been there in years, but I might go check em out. Ya never know. Its attached to a bowling alley that used to have a bunch of machines in there too. I remember the first time I played Primal Rage, and Killer Instinct. They were at the bowling alley

I was at Castles N' Coasters for my daughter's birthday on July 14. They were doing a lot of repainting and other cosmetic work. Nice to see them still taking care of the place.

Wow... Castles and Coasters... It's fair to say that, with the architecture and the arcade contents there in, it could easily become our collective Mecca.

As for Geneva on the Lake, I didn't go photo crazy as I was out with the GF. We only went this arcade as it was the last of them on the strip not go 90% redemption games.


Last night I went to BLIPSY BARCADE in Los Angeles. Accroding to about.com "It's a small operation started out by a group of friends who collected classic arcade games and would invite friends over for regular parties of drinking and gaming." (Sound like anyone we know?) "Eventually the parties became so successful that they decided to go into business and open an arcade bar, selling beer, wine and sake."

If I won the lottery I'd do the same thing only 10fold and hire as many of you talented and willing folks as I could. (Ah, things I dream about while at work)

The machines are all original, dedicated, and in poor to fair condition. Ms. Pacman (cocktail), Double Dragon, 720, Gun Fight, Robotron, Defender, Track and Field (buttons), Punch-out, Paperboy, Rampage, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Spy Hunter (sit down), Centipede, and Asteroids. Pinball had Twilight Zone (lights hardly worked), and Playboy (1974)

I did discover playing the arcade Double Dragon that my emulated version of it is way too slow. The place is in a corner of Korea town accross the street from the largest KFC I've ever seen.

The Arcade scene here in Germany is very limited, there is a Pinball Xtra-Ball Pub that I am dying to go to (now that school is finished for me), but arcades are almost non-existent. I'll post pics and owner interviews in English when I go.

But when I travel back to the USA and visit my wife's family in Fort Lauderdale I always try and visit the Florida Swap Shop. It is massive, (largest in the USA if I recall) just crazy large and a impressive site to see. I know this in not a traditional arcade but the guy has a pretty large selection of arcade games, with a few redemption games (good to see a place that has a reverse trend like this).

The main building showroom. The guy who owns it is a big car collector, so his auto collection is spread out all over the location. He even is selling his Gulfstream Jet if anyone is interested.

The Ferrari shown was used in Miami Vice.


A original Ms. Pacman with some color problems in one of the color rom chips, or a monitor going bad. It has a multigame chip in it.



A newer model multi-Donkey kong/ Mario Bros machine in mint condition.


Street Fighter with color problems or bad monitor.


His Ultracade Unit only had about three games on it. Needed some monitor adjustment. It is interesting to see the system that Hyperspin got it's inspiration from.




Metal Slug 6 Atomiswave which I am dying for the emulator to support, should be soon?



Cybersled, left monitor was out. This is one of my favorite games and will be in my collection when I get back home to the US.


Never heard of this one. I'll play it next time.


Best Rock & Roll band themed shooting game ever made..


He only has two pinballs, Ripley's Believe It or Not and my favorite Red and Ted Roadshow. I spend hours playing Roadshow when I go, I plan to spend one entire day on it the next time I go back.

If I had to have a redemption machine, then TMNT or Simpsons would be 1st choice.. Any thoughts?

castles and coasters looks AMAZING!! thats sounds like a road trip destination for sure!!

here in chicago we have a few of the 'kid friendly' chuck e cheese type of places that are technically arcades, but...

enchanted castle and haunted trails, safari land, chuck e, and D&b's

but we are also lucky enough to have an awesome arcade called galloping ghosts! 200+ games, tournaments, 15$ all you can play til 2am... i could go on, but you have to see it to believe it.

I don't have pictures,  but I'm pretty sure Kennywood in Pittsburgh still has a huge dedicated arcade,  was there last year.

Pretty good sized room,  skeeball on the sides,  huge number of arcade games in a large building,  many of the classics represented and I'm pretty sure they're all originals.  They were there when I was little,  and they're still there today.

Yes they do. The large Arcade close to the Jack Rabbit still exists. The classics are in the back. For that matter Cedar Point still has it's giant arcade near the center with a lot of old classics in working order.

In Atlanta there are the usual Dave and Busters and then a Mario Andretti Go Cart place that have a nice selection of current games.  There was a place in Kenwood that was a huge bowling alley and arcade but I can't remember the name.  Anyone know of any arcades in North Carolina? C'mon south---represent!

Cactus Jack's in Oklahoma City's been open forever and a decent arcade, if by some unfortunate turn of events you find yourself in Oklahoma.

Just a heads up for Minnesotans or visitors, AFAIK The Grand Casinos have about the best to offer in our state.

They have two locations, both centrally located and probbaly not worth the trek from Minneapolis (100+ miles North) However if you are in  central MN then it's worth it.

There's a pretty cool "barcade" here in Grand Rapids, MI called Stella's Lounge. They have a handful of pins, and probably about a dozen cabs. Lots of cheap beer, and a nice vegan friendly menu.

Cool! Glad someone might be able to use the info. I've been to both arcades and the Mille Lacs version has all the recent DK all in ones, Galaga/Ms Pac Space Invaders and another machines that has a bunch  of games like Robotron, Defender ...and a boatload more.


Here's the catch though...you cannot purchase any alcohol on the Mille Lacs reservation or Casino. You would have to bring your own to your hotel room and hit your room whenever you needed a bump lol.

Hinckley on the other hand has drinks everywhere.

I was in L.A. last month, and stopped by the Santa Monica pier arcade (three classics, and a few decent pins) mentioned elsewhere on the forums......if I'd known about Blipsy's, I would've gone there instead! Especially because the SM pier arcade was so loud you could barely hear the machine in front of you.

Not only is Funspot NH great. It bills itself as the largest arcade in the world. Has the largest collection of classic arcade games I've ever seen. All very well maintained. The arcade is evidently featured in a documentary entitled The King of Kong. Because it's also where they hold a lot of classic arcade game tournaments. It's about a 2 hour drive from Boston. But a closer airport would be Manchester, NH:

Large collection of pins but not the largest. That would be the Pinball Museum in Las Vegas.

For something different, check out the penny arcade at The Old Sledworks in Duncannon, PA.
It's not very big, but I don't know where else you can play as many old nickel and dime pre-video era games.

I went to the Wunderland nickel arcade in Salem this week.  Sorry, no pics.  I had fun there, but it was disappointing that there were no classic games...unless you consider House of the Dead 11 a classic.    If there is a place within 100 miles of Portland, OR that has a good selection of old school games, I dunno where it is.  If you do, lemme know!!

Yes, it is an awesome place.
I will be there on my birthday in October and I plan on doing the day from 10am - Midnight. We usually take a break from the games there and go downstairs to the bowling alley, have a pizza and bowl a couple of games.
Always a good time.

I would love to make it over to that penny arcade in Duncannon Pa.
maybe someday even Castles and Coasters.

Its not really a classic arcade, though they have a couple of classics, but we had a great time at Disney Quest in Downtown Disney.

Been a long time since I posted here.....

I wanted to recommend that anyone who is near Pittsburgh really needs to go check out PAPA.  Their collection of pinball machines is simply unbelievable.  I think it is only open to the public 2 or 3 times a year, but it is certainly worth the road trip.  You can check out their website and blog for more info....  They do have some videogames, but mostly pins.

That's a lot of pinball. Beautiful. Would be doubly awesome if they had cabs to match them. And check out that wide air hockey table. I think those were more common in the 70s and 80s.

It was fun. I liked their selection... we got to play a lot of machines with interesting controls I have only played in emulation... asteroids with buttons, missle command and centipedes with trackballs, Forgotten Worlds, Tapper, Tron, some cocktails, red tents, etc. Good selections of fighters, beat-um-ups, might have liked a better selection of shmups (none of the Raiden games), but they had a few.

I would agree with the varying states of repair... I have never been to another true arcade to compare it too, but I would think they would take some of the non working ones off the floor (Ms Pac, & Mr. Do among some that were nonfunctional, broken controls on The Simpsons, etc.). Some random parts and monitors laying about... not a problem for me, if I had a little kid around (if I had brought my three year old) it might have made me a bit nervous. I miss putting in quarters/tokens, but I understand why the free play thing makes sense.

$15 is good for a day pass, for an evening (we were able to spend about 3-4 hours) the cheapskate in me thought it was a little much, but overall worth it to play some many games in the wild, with their original controls! It was pretty mellow on a Wednesday night, never had to wait for a game, staff never bothered us, generally good environment. I would recommend it for sure, it was worth the hour-or-so drive from NW Indiana.

I was upset last year to find out that the Gameworks closed down in Minneapolis. Although there are not many classics, it still sucks to see any arcade go under. I had always thought the place did enough business as well. I found out yesterday that it didn't close because of money issues, but rather the landlord was an ass and imposed a ton of regulations and fees to force them out. I guess the same landlord just did the same thing to the Hard Rock Cafe next door.

Still sucks, but there is a little relief in knowing that it was not due to lack of demand.

As of maybe 6 months ago, it was true that Foxwoods Casino had an arcade with a mix of old and new games.  I can not recall anything specific though.  I can state that it is not worth a road trip.  If you want a night out and live nearby though, it is worth it just to walk around the casino and get a good dinner while stopping by the arcade.

If you're talking about Foxwoods casino in Connecticut, I'd agree its not worth a road trip for the classic games but the one nice thing about the classic games in the arcade there is that they are free. When we go to the casino for a night, I will usually stop in and play some Ms Pacman, Centipede and Space Invaders for free. Hell they get my money on the gambling floor anyway, I'll show them.

I really didn't know that you guys were a non profit.
It really is an awesome place. Its really cool to see the different signs on some of the machines, which state who donated it, along with all of the high score plaques from the competitions.

Well thats always been my worry there, that one day they will close just like the many other fun centers that have been.
They do get some good business there though. I have been there when the place is really busy (especially the haloween event) although the crowds tend to be more on the lower levels at the bowling lanes, skeeballs and newer games.

I was at Great Wolf Lodge with my Wife and kids a couple of weeks ago, and they did have an arcade...  It was pretty big, but like most, it was filled with those skill/ticket games that you could purchase junk with.  I was very happy to see that they had a couple of classic games - the Pac Man/Galaga combo as well as the Donkey Kong/Jr. combo.  I did notice they had about 20 other games around, split between driving games and shoot 'em up games, but I didn't pump my tokens into them.  Since I haven't played the classic games on a real unit in probably over 10 years, I spent an hour playing Pac Man.

My Wife eventually had to drag me away, and remind me that we were there 'for the kids'.  (It didn't take much coaxing, really.  Fun times were had by all.)

castles and coasters looks AMAZING!! thats sounds like a road trip destination for sure!!

here in chicago we have a few of the 'kid friendly' chuck e cheese type of places that are technically arcades, but...

enchanted castle and haunted trails, safari land, chuck e, and D&b's

but we are also lucky enough to have an awesome arcade called galloping ghosts! 200+ games, tournaments, 15$ all you can play til 2am... i could go on, but you have to see it to believe it.

The place in Phoenix really looks awesome.  Wish I'd had time to look around when I was out there a year ago.

Fun Land in Panama City Beach, FL had a good selection of classic games for decades, but they've finally pretty much thrown in the towel.  Stopped in there last spring, and the only older games remaining were a beat-up Ms. Pac-Man and an Arkanoid in a weird conversion cab.  Everything else (besides Skee-ball, of course) was modern.

There was an amazing multi-room arcade in the middle of the tourist strip at Manitou Springs, CO when I was out there five or so years ago.  Selection of video games was astonishing... only the second operating ROTJ machine that I'd ever seen in the wild.

Oh, thanks for the heads-up on the place in Grand Rapids.  Have to go there for work a couple of times a year, I'll be sure and hit the arcade/bar.

A classic arcade just opened up here in the twin cities (in Minneapolis) this past December; it's called "Rusty Quarters - Retro Arcade and Museum" and they've got a couple dozen classic games, all playable at only 25 cents!  My buddies and I have paid the place a visit a few times now and it's been pretty packed by the young and old alike (see photos). Great to see so many showing up to support it!

Only ones I know of in Tempe are Dave and Busters and Gameworks...  both are meh, especially when compared to C & C.
