PCB mounting feet (need like 20 sets of 4)
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:16:30 pm »
Where is a good place to get like 20 sets of PCB mounting feet.  I don't want to spend more than about $16 shipped as I can make my own past that price.  Most people seem to want like 1.50-2.00 per set.  Yikes!

I've never done it before but I've heard a lot of people say just remove the ink out of a bic pen and cut the remaining empty tube into a few short pieces and use those

Hardware store plumbing aisle.  Roll of hard white tubing, and make all you need for a few bucks.

"Why didn't I think of that?"

Great tip, thanks!

I used the bic pen method. Set the ink aside, can always pop those back in pens once they run out and still get use out of the ink. Win win in my book as you can get large packs of those pens for next to nothing.

Do you not find the bic pen solution brittle when cutting and fragile when in use?

The tubing solution looks great to me

I normally use a saw to cut them, anything with small teeth, and I'm not jumping on these things, all they need to do is separate the board from whatever I attach it to. Just drop a screw from the top of the board through the pen and into the wood or whatever.

You could even use rubber "feet" with a screw hole thru them....just snug them down...no need to torque them to hell...

Your hardware likely has them for a quarter....

Yeah, I think it might be time to make my own.  Just figured the actual feed have to be cheap somewhere.

Ok, I got the tubing and a bunch of screws/nuts for about 12 boards for $5.

What kind of screws did you get?  I couldn't find any plastic washers... so I will have to make those too.

Also, how are you cuting the tubing?  Side cutters?  How badly does it crush?

Thanks!

The greed of the pcb feet people have lost out today.   :applaud:

I just used a very sharp knife to cut the tube.  I used nylon washers on top, which home depot had.  Really though you could just cut a small piece of tube for a washer.  Then just find some screws with a large flat head and you're good to go.
