Hmm...I thought that would be an entire room full of arcade games, not a single game cabinet  :whap

If you have only one machine, but it is in a room designated as the game room is it an arcade?  What if you hook your Genesis up to the TV, is it an arcade then?

Maybe. The origin of the word arcade predates even video and pinball. It originally was used to describe a passage with rows of shops / kiosks on either side. So then places with rows of coin operatedd amusement devices were called penny arcades; rows of pinball machines pinball arcades, and with video game machines, a video arcade.

But to refer to one game machine as an arcade, is like referring to Cinnabons as "a mall".

Rothe does great work with his site, his articles, and his restorations. So it makes me cringe to see him making that mistake. Reminds me of old people referring to game cartridges as "tapes" and video uprights as "pinballs". :-D

Or calling a computer tower 'the hard drive', calling moving files to a disk or flash drive 'downloading them'..

I recall there used to be a rental place that had "Be kind, Rewind" stickers on every NES cart they rented. Always made me angry for some reason.

I'm guessing I'm in the minority here, but the misuse of the word "Arcade" does not bother me so much. (Here is a special case because it is coming from someone "in the field", thats just plain annoying.) I guess I felt the word arcade has developed into a "layman slang" to describe the game itself.

I think of it more as how people will call a cellular phone a "cell" The phone is not a cell by any definition, Cell only describes the style of phone. Just like Arcade in Arcade Machine describes the style of game machine. Slang, to me, depicts it as an OK use of the word. Not that I ever dare to use that slang.  :lol

And to be fair, I see equal misuse of the word MAME around here, but its generally accepted. I see arcade games called MAME games often enough. I can't help but think to myself, "No, MAME is not the type of game you are playing, MAME is the name of an emulator you can use to play the game on." Then I realize I am just being a pretentious jerk for caring about that kind of thing and I let the whole thing go.

Ain't that tha truth.

I disagree on 'cell phone'. It is a truncation. Arcade is a place, hence, arcade game. No way around that for anyone with any smarts.

Getting back to the beginning of this post, it seems that this is just a great way for everybody to send him pics of games and when he finds one he likes, he can undervalue it and purchase it. Either that or he has no life. Who wants to dig through posts of people's pics to tell them what they're worth?

Who is this guy anyway? I have seen other links to his blog before. They always seem to rub me the wrong way, and yet people still seem to pay attention to it and comment on his blog. Just curious...

I really dont think so. now, if you stuffed a genesis into an old golden axe cabinet, and managed to find some of those old 6 cartridge, linkable and selectable cartridge banks that babbages used to sell (ive long since forgot the name of them)

i remember when the damn things came out, i took one look and just thought (what a useless piece of junk.) or, whoever buys it is just a lazy piece of junk.

either way, i would imagine that these things are gold now, for someone wanting to do a genesis in an arcade project.

anyone out there know the name of them? they had a really weird poster for it. it was some dude with a bunch of genesis carts sticking out of his head.

face it.. people use it that way, if enough people use it, then it's part of the English language. Whether it's grammatically correct or not, it can become grammatically correct if "arcade" comes to be know ans both a place and a thing.

anyone want to come over and play my arcade?

'My arcade' is pretty bad but 'my mame' really rubs me up the wrong way

No, it's not your piece of software.

I would let them off if they called it 'my mamem'  :)

So according to Webster, its only an arcade if you bring people in and charge them....some people here might still qualify if they are trying to make some money off their friends.  >:D

Yea, the second part is this. Coupla smart looking fellas with fine fashion sense, eh? They're probably discussing societal implications of bipartisanship or the hadron collider while making sure their vehicle emissions aren't hurting the environment.

I would rather hang around a couple 'pants on the ground' idiots trying to talk cars any day instead of having to check the eco-friendliness of my vehicle and discuss social implications of anything with 'socially aware', fart-sniffing yuppies.

At least these guys don't try to hide the fact they are idiots. :lol

Id rather hang around a couple of car guys too. Guys who dont melt down anytime you tell them that an air pump is a waste. in the rest of the country we call it california junk.

here is a perfect example of what an air pump does, if people would just take the time to think about it.

just do this test. go relieve yourself when you have bad diarreah. when you are done, let the water evaporate and take a look at what you get.

now, do the same thing and flush the toilet once. then let the water evaporate again.

the result is, same amount of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, with two discharges.

same thing with an air pump in a car. of course it allows a car to pass californias stringent test.

you are simply adding a lot of water to the same amount of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- by pumping fresh air into the exhaust system. now, if only the brainiacs over there could figure out how to make the engine flush twice, then they could label all of their cars as zero emissions.

also, give credit where credit is due.
how much money does it cost to look like this?

whatever they didnt spend on the car went into their boxers.

interesting, funny how we associate smartness with a certain style of dress.. and how one style of dress that's associated with one specific group makes people makes them not smart.

Anywho, English is a mutt language.. look up the history. They drew from Spanish, Italian, German, and many more languages to help develop English. Language is constantly changing as people's use of words changes. That's just a fact.

I can understand the baggy clothes. That came about for a specific purpose--(originally for hiding weapons and drugs easily, then it became "fashion". But what's the purpose of what those two in the photo are doing? Really? Easy access for buttsecks?!

I'd think this kind of self-induced physical restriction would keep them from well executing criminal activites. Or, at least getting caught more easily for them.

In other news, I recently found out that Buckminster Fuller created a car in the 30s that held eleven people, got thirty miles to the gallon, and was supposed to top out at 120 miles per hour (though was never clocked at more than 95....).

I'm still waiting for my cold fusion car:

Apparently, cold fusion was not a hoax, it was just too inconsistent to reproduce 20 years ago so it was dismissed as a hoax. Still is inconsistent, but who knows, we are closer to figuring it out.  :dunno

3. an establishment, public area, etc., containing games of a mechanical and electronic type, as pinball and video games, that can be played by a customer for a fee.
sweet. I take it as a yes; my friends can be my customers and pay in alcohol and food :)

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I say arcade & so does like everyone I know.

If I told people I had a game that played every game they would look at me like I am not making sense

When I tell them I have an arcade that plays every game they look at me like I am cool
