Whatever browser you're using should have a search in page function. In windows, its Ctrl + F. For mac, not sure what the shortcut would be, but try the menu.
I just select "show all pages" of the thread before using cmd-F or the pc' equivalent.
Big enough threads don't have the "show all pages" feature. Not sure what the cutoff is.
I think the OP was asking if you can search for a word in the entire thread, not just the current page of it. Imagine trying to find the term 'polish' in Pixelhugger's 37 page Mission Control thread. Using the method above you'd have to page forward 36 times and search each page using the ctrl+f. I would greatly welcome a native SMF 'search this thread' feature.

However, if bandwidth is a concern what-so-ever, you might want to keep this capped. Think of the cheesecake thread, for example.
