can I use an mpeg instead of an avi for startup movie?

I have an mpeg that I like and want to use it as startup movie.  all mala will allow me to select are avi files?  Can I use an mpeg' if yes than how?

I think the Mala wiki confirmed AVI only for startup movies somewhere, but I can't find the exact reference.  I just dl'd a free mpg to avi converter and used it on that short version arcade84 intro vid, which worked.  That video doesn't look good at my screen resolution but it's a placeholder until I get something I like better.  HTH.

The Video Engine in MaLa supports playing/displaying the following file types:

*.mp*;*.vro;*.avi;*.wav;*.asf;*.wmv;*.vob;*.avs;*.mov;*.divx;*.mid;*.mp4;*.mts;*.3gp;*.swf;*.m2v;*.mkv;*.flv;*.jpg;*.bmp;*.gif

I just played a .mpg and it played it fine

The issue with the current version as the file choosing filter has not been updated to show files other than .avi
I will fix this for the next version but you can easily get around this by either

1) -Refer attached pic- change the serach criteria to *.* in the open dialogue
OR
2) Manually editing the file/path in mala.ini
