Rom separation in MA

I played with that last night, and used "Import" to bring in everything from my "MAME.LST" file into my Favourites, and then started to manually pare them down. It looks like a daunting task, so I'm hoping someone else might have a better idea.

What are you trying achieve with your favourites list?
Are you saying you have imported EVERYTHING into your favourites, then stripping it down?

I'm trying to get my own "top 100" or so in there. If there's a better way to do it, I'm open to it.

You could always do it using the multiple mame version approach - that is, take an emulator scheme in MA that you won't use (e.g. RAINE) and make a custom directory of Mame games you want in your top 100.
Follow the approach described here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=100463.0 and it should work.

I set aside some time to work on my favourites, it starts off empty.
1) show clones in main game list
2) start at the top of the list and work through the games, maybe doing one letter per session: IE Im going to to the 'A' games tonight - maybe add 10 games to your faves, then switch to the faves list and whittle it down to the essentials that fit your criteria - give yourself sometime to play each of the games a little and make an informed choice on what you like to play today, not what you liked to play 25 years ago.
3) rinse repeat
4) once complete, prune the gamelist or add new games as you discover/remember them
If you think about it, with over 8000 games (inc clones) its a much less daunting task to add 100 from nothing, rather than delete 7900 from 8000.

The way I did it was to import the entire main game list after I scanned MAME to a Favorites list. Then I removed the roms that were dupes or garbage. I also checked the option to remove adult roms in my main list before I copied it. The result is a perfect list, which includes clones that I choose. For example UMK3 and the Challenger version of MKII.
I'd be happy to share the .lst file for those that are interested. It's a proprietary format that only MA understands so cannot be edited outside of MA. I am running version 2.10 of MA but it should be compatible with earlier versions as well. I am running MAME .119 but that shouldn't matter either. You can always add games from your main scanned list.
The only caveat, is that the game lists are location specific, which means that you must have mame in the C:\mame folder for my list to work for you.
EDIT: Gamelists attached below. I included MAME Favorites, MAME Multiplayer (great for quad panels like mine - these are games that have 3 or more players), MAME Shmups and MAME Sports
