22" Touchscreen inwall Jukebox
« on: July 16, 2010, 02:11:26 am »
Today I received my 22" fullHD multitouch screen I bought off ebay for $ 215.
I will use it to create my first project. A touch screen jukebox that I will hang in my bar.

the idea is to mount the screen inside the wall and frame it with a picture frame.
Inspiration: http://www.shuttertalk.com/articles/digitalframe

First question I want to ask the pro's: Is removing the case from a touch screen any different then removing a case from a normal LCD screen?

Not really except you will probably have a touch sensor over the actual LCD panel. I've taken apart some 17" NEC Touch screens and the only thing different between a touch and non touch model was an extra pane of glass over the LCD panel that senses touch and translates it into mouse clicks.

Of course there was some wiring diffences, but it was generally the same. Just be careful and you will be fine.

Many times thats not even necessary or desirable since the frame creates a professional bezel. Can it mount flush to the inside of the wall?

I'm gonna have to try that first.
I want the screen to be level with the wall.
when the screen is in the case it is about 3-4 mm deeper
I'm gonna have to try it to see if I can live with that :-)

hopefully I won't have to remove the casing.

Jump over here (and then pull down a page).

I found upon close inspection that the plastic bezel appeared to be an integral part of holding the touch screen glass in place. I did not see the utility of removing it and then essentially having to rebuild it again.  I chose to embed the screen behind a bezel of my own making using thin hardboard.

I will try to fit the whole screen in the wall without removing the case.

But first things first.
Today I will be running some cable from the house to the stables (the stables have been converted into a bar).
Currently I have a 1.5mm Power cable going from the house to the stables. I'm going to change it for something stronger. Now I can hook up about 3600 Watt to it. But when I'm using the waterboiler (2000W) and the fridges and the lighting, it's just not strong enough.
And adding a computer to it won't help much.

Now that we're digging anyway I'm gonna put some coax and some cat6 ethernet cable down as well.

Distance to cover : about 20m (about 22 yards)
Temperature this afternoon: 33°C (about 91°F)  :-[

Pictures to follow.

We've done some work the last few days.

The distance we had to dig was 45 metres.
I put in a new power cable, grounding, 2 cat6 ethernet cables and a coax cable.

We cut the hole in the wall and placed in the screen.

We still have to make a cabinet for the pc and then mount the speakers in the room.

The 22" touchscreen built in the wall of the bar. We still have to make a frame to hide all the holes. Only the visible part of the screen will show then. The case will be hidden.

Picture from the back. For now I put two speakers in there, In the future I will hang them on the walls

Picture from the back with the PC and subwoofer. We will make a custom cabinet for the PC, we're doing some testing with the audio system, but I think I will buy new, more powerful speakers.

Wow - cool.  How did you cut the hole in the wall?

First I drew the lines and made sure it was all level.
Then I used a tool like this (I don't know what the word is in english but in dutch it's 'slijpschijf')

I drilled a hole through the wall in every corner so I knew where to cut on the other side of the wall.

Then i used one of these to remove the remaining concrete and make it even.

Top tool is an angle grinder and bottom is a roto-hammer or chisel hammer  or combination cant really tell.

Update.

I finished the custom cabinet to hold the PC. The PC is in and I finished hanging all the speakers.
I started work on the frame. I cut it from MDF and i painted the first coating. It's drying as we speak :-)

Here are some pictures.

You can see I moved the PC from the cases of beer to the custom cabinet above the screen.

I finished the project.
Frame is around the screen, software is finetuned and the computer and cables are worked away quite nicely.
Here are the pictures

Enjoy

I'm using AlbumPlayer http://www.albumplayer.com

I like it because it looks very nice (scrolling through albums is very smooth and uses kinetic scrolling like on an iphone)
And everything can be blocked so your user can't break anything (you can block playlist changes, play, pauze and stop buttons, you can block track skipping, fast forwarding and rewinding,....)

I just allow adding tracks to the end of the playlist.

I live in Belgium but I bought it in Germany.

Here's one:

Please consider voltage requirements. We use 220V, I believe in the US they use 110V

very nice! That is a cool idea! I You are lucky with the back of that wall. If i wanted to do the same i would end up with the back of the TV in my toilet. Maybe we dutch speaking people should unite in a thread where we can share knowledge on where to get parts. People in the US have it easy, for me in holland it's always a quest on where to get my parts. For most parts i just order them in the US and have to pay a ridiculous amount on shippingcost :(
