Strange Crash w/ Video Snaps
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:30:22 pm »
Greetings,
I've recently downloaded a large chuck of video snaps for MALA. This seems to be when my troubles began... I've got the video snaps set up, and they are all displaying correctly in MALA, however whenever I scroll to a game with "(Playchoice)" in the title, the app completely crashes out to the desktop, with no taskbar. (No errors indicated)

There's been a couple of titles that if there is no video snap, the title screen snap displays instead, so in theory, that should be happening if these videos aren't being found.

Any suggestions? Thanks

The problem is, I can't remove them... :badmood:

MALA crashes as soon as it's stopped on, therefore I can't right-click to remove. I've tried physically removing the rom files from my directory, then 'updating game list' from within Mala and they still remain...

I'm assuming I have to hand-edit the gamelist by hand somehow to remove the offending roms. :dizzy:

I believe he is referring to removing the screenshot file(s). I too have found that Mala crashes with some seemingly normal images. If you can identify which game it is trying to load the snap for, you can either remove the offending snap entirely (Mala will show the default or no pic), or you can open the snap in a photo editing program like Photoshop, re-save it overwriting the original, and try again.

Thanks for the tip, I will be sure to give this a try!  :applaud:

One thing though, it does seem strange that its only on 'PlayChoice' titles. They all use the same screenshot, perhaps renamed for the revision...

And are you suggesting removing the video snap, or the title-screen snap to solve the issue? As I mentioned, my problem arrived after the videos were installed.

I'm getting braver with all of this... I finally compiled my own MAME to update and have highscore data. I've got enough room that I can make a backup of the directory and try the beta. That being said, is the next release just around the corner? I find that as soon as I update an app, there's another version 2 days later  ;)

I've finally had time to try this out. It works great!  :applaud: Thanks for the tip, and all the hard work LoadMan.
For anyone else trying to do this, I just created a separate directory for the beta version of Mala, copied over all the dll files and anything else it asked for and it works 100%. The older version is there fully functional should you ever need it.

I can't wait to get my cabinet done, as the software end is now 98% ready to go! :hissy:

Edit: I've also disabled the MAME screensaver I had setup through windows as I found it somewhat unstable and setup the built-in Mala screensaver, and it works perfectly and performs exactly like it should.
