Finish One... Another Drops In Your Lap?!
« on: February 26, 2010, 02:08:25 am »
Will it even end?!

Lookee what I got for eighty bones...

Overall in decent enough condition for a project start.  Unfortunately the G07 monitor chassis is shot... 116v at the AC plug but no response from the chassis at all... now I have 3 G07's to rebuild... ugg.

She's definately a project... the top edges have seen a little water too it looks like... requiring sanding...oh how I love sanding...

BTW - It was only about a mile from my house... and I have the door too (which has the door sheet still intact).  I have all the docs that came with the cab as well... and keys!!  But of course the ground plug is missing...

I played it in MAME before buying i... seems like a fun game... plus because this is a System 1 cabinet,  it's just an easy swap through the front to turn it in to a Peter Packrat , Marble Madness, Road Runner, or Road Blaster...

I would dig up the post from a couple of years ago where you were crying about not being able to find any cabs in your area, but I'm too lazy.   ;D

Nice score.

Nice score.

But that was when JUST got in the hobby... no connections... nothing.

The pickins here are still somewhat slim in comparison to other locations,  but there are far fewer buzzards lookin' for deals as well...

Alright... thus far these are the kits I have for the System 1 cab:

Indy is what it was when I bought it...though I did replace the yellow Wico stick with a proper Atari Logo stick (rebuilt)...

Then I picked up a Marble Madness kit for a good price...

Finally I was PMed by a KLOVian and given a price I couldn't pass up for a Road Blasters kit:

Now it's time to restore the cab.  I've already picked up a set of Phoenix Arcade side art... I already have the paint... and I went with dark blue T-Molding which I took possession of a couple days ago.   I just need to make some time to clean up the cab,  yank the old T-molding,  sand,  paint,  etc...

Now you have to get 2 more Atari System cabs.  (Don't you hate it when that happens?)
NO MORE!!

If I came across one (or two) super cheap... possibly.  What makes the System 1 cab so nice (and makes you wonder who the retard was that designed the System 2 cab) is the easy front access.  I can swap games in about 5 minutes time... maybe 7 or so to do a full swap with marquee included...

Never seen a Marble Madness cab in all its glory.  Up until a couple months ago when I started working on my own MAME, I thought it was a NES game only.   :-[  Looks pretty sweet though.

Welp... I finally got started on restoring this cab.  I got 80%+ of the old vinyl off the cab last night before my hot decal remover broke on me...

I should have the rest done today.  I've decided to go with paint (oil based black satin) rather than vinyl because... well... vinyl sucks ass and I manage to screw it up every time I've tried.   I have some Phoenix Arcade side art to go on as well and I picked up some dark blue T-Molding that will look real nice on the cab...

I finished stripping the cab... I then busted out some glazing putty to fix a few dings, etc...

Tomorrow I plan on sanding and priming with paint likely coming Thursday...

So did ya get that RS desoldering iron to beef up the hot decal remover? If so, how did you like it?

I did and I like it much better.  It's hotter and it's sturdier.

I finished this cab.  I went with black satin latex paint because I had some on hand.  I've ALWAYS used black oil based enamel and now I know why.  The result isn't bad,  but damn,  this stuff goes on MUCH thinner.  It took 3 coats of black to cover the white primer!  Blah... that sucks.  The only real benefits of the water based latex is cleanup and smell.   The oil based stuff just goes on much nicer.

That said,  the finished product looks good.  I went with a dark blue T-Molding.  At first I was a little disappointed in the lack of "pop" that light blue gives... but after a while I started to dig the subtle change of the dark blue.

Nice job man.
I agree, the difference in the t-molding blue is subtle but nice.
